DPWH ACTIVELY PARTICIPATES IN DEPED'S BRIGADA ESKWELA

In line with the opening of classes, The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Negros Occidental 1st District Engineering Office actively participates in the Annual Oplan Balik Eskwela (OBE) of the Department of Education (DepEd) for the school year 2022-2023.

The District visited four (4) schools, including Efigenio-Enrica Lizares Memorial School, Angeles J. Montinola Farm School, Mambulac Elementary School in Silay City, and Buenaventura V. Rodriguez Elementary School in Sagay City.

Regional Director Nerie D. Bueno asserted that the collaboration with DepEd on this initiative provides important help in the students' need as well as a way for the department to evaluate the standard of the school's facilities and infrastructure.

"The active participation of DPWH with DepEd's Brigada Eskwela is significant as it responds to the school's infrastructure concern and maintenance of the buildings in the safety of staff and students in the re-opening of schools for this school year," RD Bueno said.

Efigenio-Enrica Lizares Memorial School received paints and paint brushes for school beautification, while roadside workers from Angeles J. Montinola Farm School assisted in grass removal from the school grounds, as well as the school obtaining paints and brushes for school rejuvination.

Furthermore, school supplies were distributed to Mambulac Elementary School and Buenaventura V. Rodriguez Elementary School personnel in order to properly prepare students for the onset of classes.

Mambulac Elementary School Head Grace B. Doloso expressed gratitude for the school materials supplied by the DPWH staff.

"With these (school supplies), our students will be better equipped to face the approaching school year, considering how challenging it will be to return from the restrictions of the pandemic," said School Head Deloso.

DPWH continues to collaborate with DepEd on the building, maintenance, and renovation of school facilities under the Basic Education Facilities Fund (BEFF).

NEW FLYOVERS TO OPTIMIZE TRAVEL EFFICIENCY IN ILOILO CITY

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo City District Engineering Office established new flyover projects to optimize travel efficiency along the circumferential road in Iloilo City.

These infrastructures, which are part of the Build, Build, Build Program, aim to regulate traffic and reduce travel time for travelers entering and exiting the city as well as the neighboring provinces.

DPWH 6 Regional Director Nerie D. Bueno explained the ₱591.2 million Jibao-an Flyover in Brgy. Hibao-an, Mandurriao, which runs along the Iloilo Circumferential Road-1, includes the construction of a 240-meter-long flyover comprising six 40-meter-long spans.

"The Jibao-an flyover aims to minimize traffic congestion in the adjacent towns of Pavia and San Miguel to Metro Iloilo, as well as the streets along Mandurriao district," RD Bueno said.

To date, the project is already 85% accomplished and is expected to be completed before the end of the year. The remaining work includes coping of abutments
A and B; 4 pieces of Girders; mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls; and deck slab and approach slab.

On the other hand, RD Bueno emphasized the Buhang flyover in Brgy. Buhang, Jaro, along Circumferential Road-1 crossing Iloilo-Capiz Road (New Route), entails a 200-meter, 5-span flyover amounting to ₱520 million.

"The Buhang flyover is designed to make travel faster and more convenient in Iloilo's neighboring towns and coastal areas. This will help to develop the local economy within the community of Iloilo City," RD Bueno stated.

Consequently, the infrastructure has completed 81% completed and expected to be done also by the end of the year. The remaining work on the flyover includes a concrete slab from Pier 2 to Pier 3; a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall and approach slab at Abutment A and B, solar lights; and reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings.

"There is no doubt that the city of Iloilo is the economic hub of Western Visayas, with businesses thriving and job opportunities aplenty. These infrastructures will be beneficial as they will save time, provide convenience, and create more opportunities for Ilonggos. It is our mission at DPWH to provide quality infrastructure that is responsive to the needs of every Filipino," said RD Bueno.

ASPHALT ROAD FACILITATES CONVENIENT TRANSPORTATION TO NORTHERN ILOILO

Convenient and faster travel to northern Iloilo and neighboring provinces of Capiz and Aklan will be enjoyed by motorists and the general public with the improvement along Iloilo-Capiz Road (New Route), specifically in Leganes, Iloilo.

Undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office, the ₱72-million project involves asphalt overlaying of 4-lane, 3-kilometer concrete road. Reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings will also be provided for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

DPWH 6 Regional Director Nerie D. Bueno said the improved road will provide better transport access going to towns and tourist destinations in northern Iloilo and to provinces of Capiz and Aklan, which leads to Boracay Island.

“Asphalt road will provide motorists with smoother driving experience and reduce maintenance cost of vehicles,” Regional Director Nerie D. Bueno said.

“The asphalt road will likewise restore the surface ability of the road to handle heavy traffic and will improve the riding quality and noise while traveling,” Director Bueno added.

Meantime, OIC-District Engineer Mario G. Soriano said the provision of reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings and solar studs will ensure safety of motorists and pedestrians especially at night.

“The pavement markings and solar studs are visible at night that will guide our motorists to stay on their lanes, and will provide warning among our pedestrians not to go within the lane markings to avoid untoward incidents,” DE Soriano said.
