Today, April 23, the National Library of the Philippines joins the global observance of World Book and Copyright Day, highlighting books and reading as drivers of education, equality, and sustainable development. In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, literature empowers individuals and communities through knowledge and creativity.

Books connect generations, preserve cultures, and give voice to diverse stories, including indigenous languages under the International Decade of Indigenous Languages. Protecting literary works through copyright ensures that creators are recognized and their contributions sustained.
Let us celebrate not only the joy of reading but also the rights behind every story. Read, create, and protectโ€”because every story matters.

The dialogue between ancient tradition and modern progress took center stage last April 17, 2026, as students gathered at the American Corner Iloilo (3rd Floor, HLL) for a timely seminar. This seminar was a successful collaboration between the Henry Luce III Library and the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) program, organized specifically by the BLIS class, SpT 3202: Indigenous Knowledge and Multiculturalism under Asst. Prof. Vince Ervin V. Palcullo.

The event, titled โ€œ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—ช๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฎ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—น๐—ฑ,โ€ featured an enlightening discussion led by Asst. Prof. Donne Jone P. Sodusta. Known to many as Kuya Donne or Teacher Donne, he serves as an Assistant Professor of Education at the Division of Professional Education, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV). Additionally, he is the Assistant Project Manager of the UPV Action Research Project.

The session focused on the delicate act of Indigenous Knowledge in the Modern World: Balancing Preservation and Exchange in Multicultural Spaces. The audience, comprising the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English (BSEd-E) first and second year students and the BLIS third year students, was challenged by Asst. Prof. Sodusta to think beyond the classroom. As future educators, communicators, and information stewards, the students engaged in a Q&A, reflecting their roles in keeping these โ€œliving archivesโ€ alive. The seminar underscored that preserving indigenous wisdom isnโ€™t just about looking backward; itโ€™s about moving forward with respect and intentionality.

Let's explore the Rosendo Mejica museum in Molo, Iloilo City. Mejica was the publisher of Makinaugalingon newspaper, the countryโ€™s longest-running vernacular newspaper before World War II. It has recently been included in the UNESCO Philippinesโ€™ Memory of the World national register, recognized for its enduring cultural and historical value.

Please note that visiting the museum is by appointment only. We thank Pilar Martinez and Prof. Rene Trance for accommodating our visit.

The WorkAbilities Center once again collaborated with the Henry Luce III Library to conduct a meaningful and inclusive internship program that highlighted the value of opportunity, growth, and community collaboration.

The internship commenced with a Welcome Program held on February 23, 2026, at the American Corner Iloilo, welcoming four learners with special needs who were given the chance to experience a supportive workplace environment within the university library. The initiative aimed to provide hands-on learning experiences, build confidence, and help develop practical skills that can prepare the learners for future employment opportunities.

Over the 10-day internship, the learners were introduced to various basic library tasks and routines under the guidance of librarians and student assistants. Through patience, encouragement, and teamwork, the participants gained valuable exposure to workplace responsibilities while also strengthening their communication, independence, and social interaction skills.

The program concluded with a Closing Program held on March 12, 2026, where the interns, their parents and guardians, mentors, and supervisors gathered to celebrate the successful completion of the internship. The event was also honored by the presence of Dra. Cecile Dagohoy, the university presidentโ€™s wife. A special highlight of the closing program was the recognition of the learners for their dedication, enthusiasm, and growth throughout the internship, celebrated through the presentation of ribbons and certificates.

This partnership between the Henry Luce III Library and the WorkAbilities Center continues to demonstrate the universityโ€™s commitment to inclusivity, empowerment, and community engagement. By providing meaningful opportunities for learners with special needs, the program fosters a culture that values diversity and ensures that every individual is given the chance to learn, contribute, and thrive.

The success of this yearโ€™s internship once again affirms that when institutions work together with compassion and purpose, they can create spaces where everyone feels welcomed and capable of achieving their potential.

The UNESCO-Philippine National Commission, through its Philippine Memory of the World (MoW) Committee, recognizes the Makinaugalingon Newspaper as the fourth documentary heritage collection inscribed in the UNESCO MoW Philippine Register (National), joining Ganito Kami Noonโ€ฆ Paano Kayo Ngayon?, the FPJ Film Collections, and the Bangsamoro Peace Records.

Founded and managed by Rosendo Madrazo Mejica, Makinaugalingon was the longest-running vernacular newspaper in pre-World War II Iloilo. Published from 1913 to 1941, with a brief return in 1946 and a special issue in 1952, it produced 30 volumes (2,972 issues), becoming one of the most comprehensive records of early 20th-century Iloilo and the Philippines during the American period.

More than a newspaper, it was a voice for Ilonggos โ€” a platform where ideas were exchanged and histories were written. It bore witness to a defining period in our history, upholding the dignity of the Hiligaynon language.

Today, nearly complete bound copies are carefully preserved at the Rosendo Mejica Historical Landmark and Museum in Molo, Iloilo City, safeguarding a legacy that continues to shape our understanding of Ilonggo identity and Philippine history.
