The Maritime Industry Authority Regional Office VI (MRO VI) headed by its Regional Director, Engr. Bernardo A. Pollo and through its STCW Section, in collaboration with the STCW Head Office, hosted a Calibration Program for MARINA-accredited Competency Assessors in Iloilo City, bringing together 14 accredited competency assessors from various Assessment Centers in Western Visayas on 11 August 2026.

The calibration sessions were facilitated by Capt. Danilo G. Arevalo, Chairman of the Board of Marine Deck Officers (BOMDO); C/E Reynaldo S. Rabino, Chairman of the Board of Marine Engineer Officers (BOMEO); 2/O Paulo M. Faronda of the Board of Deck Ratings (BODRA); and Engr. Allan Raymond R. Florencio of the Board of Engine Ratings (BOERA). Personnel from MARINA Regional Office VI also provided support and coordination throughout the program.

The discussions focused on the roles and responsibilities of competency assessors before, during, and after practical assessments, including the proper conduct of assessments, prohibited practices, and emerging directions in practical assessment.

The calibration program underscores MARINAโ€™s commitment to ensuring that competency assessments are conducted fairly, objectively, consistently, and in accordance with prescribed standards. The activity highlights the importance of collaboration between MARINA and its accredited Assessment Centers in maintaining a competent, standardized, and credible assessment system for Filipino seafarers.

Travelers, businesses, and local communities are expected to benefit from faster, safer, and more efficient sea travel as M/V Lite Ferry Twenty officially entered service on the Batangas Cityโ€“Caticlan route, strengthening one of the countryโ€™s key sea corridors connecting Luzon and Western Visayas.

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) welcomed the launch of the new Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel, saying it will enhance the movement of passengers and cargo along the strategic Batangasโ€“Caticlan corridor, a vital gateway that supports tourism, trade, and regional economic growth. The agency likewise granted Pioneering Status to M/V Lite Ferry Twenty in recognition of its introduction of an upgraded shipping service on the route.

MARINA Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan said the significance of every new vessel extends beyond expanding the countryโ€™s domestic fleet, as it โ€œcarries not only passengers and cargo, but also opportunities, livelihoods, and hope for millions of Filipinos.โ€

With a capacity to carry 578 passengers, 30 ten-wheeler trucks, and four passenger vehicles per voyage, M/V Lite Ferry Twenty is expected to improve passenger mobility and facilitate the efficient movement of goods between Luzon and Western Visayas, further supporting economic activity across the two regions.

The vessel is classified by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) through RINA of Italy, one of the worldโ€™s leading ship classification societies, signifying compliance with internationally recognized standards for ship design, construction, and safety.

Completed in January 2026, the vessel measures 90 meters in length, 20 meters in breadth, and has a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 3,923 tons.

Designed for greater passenger comfort and operational efficiency, M/V Lite Ferry Twenty features wider passageways, spacious passenger areas, enhanced safety systems, and standard and tourist-class accommodations that exceed MARINAโ€™s minimum requirements.

According to MARINA, the vesselโ€™s entry into service reflects the continuing investments of the private sector in modernizing the countryโ€™s domestic fleet while complementing the governmentโ€™s efforts to provide safer, more reliable, and globally competitive maritime transport services.

MARINA said private companiesโ€™ investments in modern vessels such as M/V Lite Ferry Twenty reinforce the Philippine maritime industryโ€™s commitment to strengthening inter-island connectivity, supporting economic development, and improving the overall travel experience of the Filipino public.
