IN PHOTOS | Ready Together: Empowering Parents and Guardians for Gender-Responsive Disaster Preparedness

The UPV Balay-Balay Child Minding Center (BBCMC) in the Iloilo City and Miagao campuses conducted the training “Ready Together: Empowering Parents and Guardians for Gender-Responsive Disaster Preparedness” on 6 October 2026 at the GDP Conference Room, UPV Iloilo City campus.

Atty. Melissa P. Banias, OIC Chief of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Division of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region VI, served as the resource speaker for the training.

The activity aimed to strengthen the disaster preparedness of BBCMC parents and guardians by enhancing their awareness of potential hazards and equipping them with essential safety tips and life-saving strategies. The training also emphasized the importance of being prepared to effectively anticipate, respond to, and recover from emergencies and natural calamities, while promoting a gender-responsive and child-centered approach to disaster risk reduction and management.

Pinagtibay ng ang paggamit ng terminong victim-survivor sa pagtukoy sa mga taong nakaranas ng seksuwal na karahasan.

Sa isang Desisyong isinulat ni Associate Justice Japar B. Dimaampao, pinagtibay ng Ikatlong Dibisyon ng Korte Suprema ang hatol na guilty sa isang lalaki dahil sa panggagahasa sa isang 12-anyos na bata.

Tumestigo ang menor de edad na habang natutulog ang lahat, kinaladkad siya ng akusado palabas ng tirahan ng kanyang tiyuhin. Ang akusado, na kinakasama ng kanyang ina, ay pinagsamantalahan siya, tinutukan ng kutsilyo, at nagbantang papatayin kung sasabihin niya kaninuman ang nangyari.

Nagsumbong ang biktima sa kanyang tiyuhin at tiyahin na inaabuso siya ng akusado mula noong siya ay siyam na taong gulang pa lamang. Hindi niya ito agad isinumbong dahil natatakot siya sa mga banta ng akusado.

Pinagtibay ng Korte Suprema ang hatol na guilty matapos nitong matukoy na napatunayan ang lahat ng elemento ng panggagahasa at positibong nakilala ng victim-survivor ang akusado bilang nanggahasa sa kanya. Bukod sa parusang reclusion perpetua o hanggang 40 taong pagkakakulong, inatasan ang lalaki na magbayad sa victim-survivor ng PHP 450,000 bilang civil indemnity at danyos.

Nilinaw din ng Korte ang terminolohiyang ginagamit sa mga kasong may kinalaman sa seksuwal na karahasan. Sa halip na gamitin ang terminong “victim,” pinagtibay nito ang paggamit ng “victim-survivor” para kilalanin kapwa ang pinsalang dulot ng krimen at ang katatagang ipinakikita ng mga nakaligtas dito sa pagharap at pagbangon mula sa naturang karahasan.

Bilang bahagi ng mga pagsisikap ng pamahalaan na magbigay ng komprehensibong suporta sa mga victim-survivor, inatasan din ng Korte Suprema ang Department of Social Welfare and Development na i-refer ang menor de edad sa angkop na r**e crisis center.

ADVISORY:

In observance of Proclamation No. 326 (s. 2012), which declares the fourth Monday of September each year as “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga” Day, and in compliance with Malacañang’s Memorandum Circular No. 136, work at the University of the Philippines Visayas shall be suspended starting 1:00 PM on 28 September 2026.

However, personnel of offices/units delivering essential/vital services (e.g. health, security, and disaster response and crisis management) shall continue their operations.

Online violence against women doesn’t stop on a screen 🤳

It has real-world consequences: women and girls restrict their online presence, suffer mental health crises, and lose confidence to speak up. Some face physical violence, even femicide, when abuse online escalates offline.

At the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, leaders, survivors, civil society, technology experts, young people and the private sector called for coordinated action to tackle online violence against women and girls:

✔️ Safer technology
✔️ Better support for survivors

The Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment (OASH), University of the Philippines Visayas is looking for a SENIOR OFFICE AIDE.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of two (2) years of studies in college
- One (1) year of relevant experience

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Organize and facilitate yearly ASH orientation activities and coordinateother OASH related events such as workshops, information campaigns, andrelated activities as necessary
- Help in the preparation and update of brochures, pamphlets, and relatedinformation materials that would help disseminate information related tosexual harassment and gender-related awareness
- Accept and document incoming calls and other sexual harassment-related communications
- Accommodate UP constituents and visitors that enter the office
- Manage and organize the OASH filing system
- Perform general office clerk duties and errands
- Arrange travel of OASH Coordinator by booking accommodations andreservation needs as required
- Maintain office supply inventory and office equipment as needed
- Perform other related tasks assigned by the OASH Coordinator

IN PHOTOS: The UPV Gender and Development Program and the UPV Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment conducted the Gender Awareness and Sensitivity Orientation & Anti-Sexual Harassment Orientation for personnel of the UPV Brackishwater Aquaculture Center (UPV BAC) on 16 September 2026 at the UPV BAC in Leganes, Iloilo.

The orientation aimed to cultivate and institutionalize a culture of awareness, accountability, and proactive prevention of sexual harassment, gender-based violence, and discrimination, while reinforcing the shared responsibility of fostering a safe, respectful, inclusive, and gender-responsive UPV community for all.
