BAKHAWANihan Year 3: Growing Partnerships for a Sustainable Future

A new collaboration took root on June 25, 2026, as the Municipal Government of Carles, under the leadership of Hon. Arnold T. Betita II, through the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), brought the BAKHAWANihan Project to Brgy. Tinigban.

This environmental initiative was made possible through the strong partnership of the Brgy. Tinigban Officials, Tinigban Integrated School, and the Fisherfolks Association of Tinigban headed by their President, Mr. Leo Logronio. Through their dedication, the local community continues to manage, protect, and preserve the mangrove ecosystem and the Tinigban Marine Protected Area (MPA).

In celebration of Philippine Arbor Day and the Hinugyaw sa Kadagatan Festival, the activity successfully planted 1,500 mangroves and conducted an environmental education campaign for the students of Tinigban Integrated School. The initiative gathered approximately 200 participants who shared a common commitment toward protecting coastal resources and promoting environmental responsibility.

The Municipal Government of Carles also extends its appreciation to Iloilo PDRRM Officer Ret. PCOL. Cornelio Salinas for gracing the activity and showing support for this meaningful environmental endeavor.

Through BAKHAWANihan Year 3, we continue to strengthen community partnerships, nurture our coastal ecosystems, and inspire future generations to become stewards of the environment.

PUBLIC STATEMENT‼️‼️‼️

To the residents of Brgy. Barosbos and the general public:

We have received reports and observed multiple social media posts regarding the alleged sighting of an “Indian Cobra” within the barangay. In response, the Barangay Officials immediately coordinated with the MENRO to address the situation.

An immediate investigation was conducted by the MENRO. However, the individual who claimed to have seen and photographed the snake was unable to provide the original photo, and the details given were insufficient. Upon arrival of the team at the reported location, the area had already been cleared, and no snake was found. It was also observed that the photos circulating online were only screenshots and lacked verification. Several photos and videos are now being widely shared on Facebook without confirmed authenticity.

In light of this, we would like to urge the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, as this may cause unnecessary panic within the community.

We would also like to share the following important facts:

The “Indian Cobra” is not native to the Philippines. There are no verified records of this species naturally occurring in the country.

Snakes play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. They help control rodent populations and other pests that may harm agriculture or spread disease.

Not all snakes are dangerous. Most species avoid human interaction and will only act defensively when threatened.

In case of any encounter with wildlife:

Avoid approaching or attempting to capture the animal.

Maintain a safe distance to prevent harm to both humans and wildlife.

Immediately report the sighting to the barangay or proper authorities for appropriate action.

Finally, we remind everyone to practice responsibility when using social media. Sharing unverified information can lead to fear, confusion, and misinformation.

Let us work together to ensure the safety of our community while also protecting our environment.
