Mike P. De Leon
May 24, 1947- August 28, 2025

Mike de Leon’s introduction to the film industry was quiet and classic - he shot and produced what would become one of the best films, 'Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag'. From that foray, he eased into his own career, which has been described as maybe the shortest among great filmmakers but otherwise marked by unfailing excellence, starting with a dark treatise on Filipino lenten ritual called ‘Itim’ in 1976.

This was followed by a loving tribute to the glory days of LVN under the formidable guidance of his grandmother, Doña Narcisa ‘Sisang’ de Leon, with the tender, bittersweet drama, ‘Kung Mangarap ka’t Magising’. From here, he carved his own niche by crafting the most sophisticated social commentary and visual diatribes on religion, politics, the sociology of violence and the dense if contentious social construct of heroes. These works include 'Kakabakaba ka Ba' [1980], ‘Kisapmata’ [1981], and ‘Batch 81' [81].

There was a brief hiatus after this, which then saw him bringing up in 1984 ‘Sister Stella L’. A gap ensued again, after which came the compelling ‘Bayaning 3rd World' ushering in the millennium. As if taunting his admirers and critics alike, it took almost two decades before he would gift us with 'Citizen Jake'.

Not that we needed to be reminded of his greatness and yet if we are to reckon our remembering of good, astute filmmaking, Mike de Leon had more than enough themes for us to remember our cinematic journey with a one-of-a-kind director, an artist who did it in his own, sweet, at times, difficult, way.

Paalam at Maraming Salamat .
