Yesterday afternoon, August 20, the Iloilo City Government, through the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO), issued a statement clarifying its actions, which have led to the illegal arrest, detention, and filing of trumped-up charges against a bolantero from the Iloilo Terminal Market (Super). The LEEO statement blames the victim and deliberately distorts what actually happened to the bolantero on the afternoon of August 18.

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) Panay and the Panay Consumers Alliance (PCA) issue this joint statement in support of our bolanteros against harassment, criminalization, and the destruction of their livelihood by the Iloilo City Government.

The Marcos administration is proposing a Php7.2-trillion national budget for 2027, describing it as a budget for inclusive growth, stronger public services, and a more resilient Philippines.

Given that the 2027 budget operates within the same bureaucrat capitalist system that still places high value on projects lining the pockets of favored contractors and politicians, it will not answer the basic needs of the people: food on the table, decent work, quality education, accessible health care, and safe communities.

The massive flooding in Iloilo City last night, with floodwaters still remaining in houses, footpaths, passageways and roads, is a stark reminder to government that the people deserve more than simply accepting floods as an inevitable consequence of heavy rain.

When our health, safety and lives are at risk because of systemic theft, we must demand what is due to us. The people must exact justice.

The City of Iloilo has been flooded tonight due to nonstop heavy rain that has reportedly been pouring since around 5 this afternoon.

Netizens and media personnel have reported floodwaters rising to alarming levels, in some areas reportedly reaching above the heads of residents.

The City of Iloilo is already a low-lying area. But with nonstop urban development that has clogged waterways and sewerage systems, coupled with failed and corrupt infrastructure projects, especially flood-control projects, billions and billions of pesos in public money have gone to waste while residents continue to suffer from a failed system.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Fifth State of the Nation Address was perhaps his most politically calculated speech yet — but also his most detached from the lived realities of ordinary Filipinos.

Listening to the President, one would think he was describing a different country. His narrative painted a Philippines where corruption is being defeated, the economy is steadily improving, and public services are expanding. Yet outside the halls of Batasang Pambansa, millions continue to suffer from soaring fuel prices, expensive electricity, inadequate wages, insecure jobs, landlessness, worsening poverty, and shrinking democratic space. This was, in every sense, a LUTANG NA SONA.

Pax Silica: Chaining the Philippines to the US War Machine

Pax Silica deepens Philippine dependence on the US. This initiative is a new form of neocolonial control, tying the Philippines more closely to US economic, political, and military interests rather than promoting genuine development.

The Philippines is targeted for its minerals and labor. The country's rich deposits of silica, copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and rare earth elements, along with its low-cost labor force, make it a strategic source of raw materials and manufacturing for US-led semiconductor and AI supply chains.

Pax Silica supports the US war economy. This initiative will integrate the Philippines into supply chains that serve not only civilian industries but also AI-driven military technologies, benefiting the US military-industrial complex and strengthening US military operations in the Asia-Pacific.

The initiative threatens communities, the environment, and sovereignty. The planned Economic Security Zone and related projects are seen as accelerating land conversion, mining, displacement of farmers and Indigenous peoples, militarization, labor exploitation, environmental degradation, and foreign control over strategic resources.

Push calls for national industrialization and an independent foreign policy. Instead of Pax Silica, we should advocate for a self-reliant industrial economy, the development of Filipino technology and industries, the protection of national sovereignty, and the termination of military agreements that reinforce US influence in the Philippines.
