The province is home to four indigenous cultural communities, and each has its own distinct name for the small primate!

The Manobo of Jose Abad Santos and other DavOcc towns call the animal ๐„๐ฆ๐ฆ๐žฬ๐ฌ

The Blaan, meanwhile, call it ๐Œ๐š๐ฅ

For the Tagakolu, the word is ๐€๐ฆ๐š๐

And for the Sangil, they are called ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ก

Extant literature has labeled the Tarsier population in Davao Occidental as ๐ถ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘ ๐‘ฆ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘โ„Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž, the Philippine Tarsier. But in truth, research into Tarsiers remains scarce.

This scarcity is particularly relevant for Davao Occidental because it is the Philippine province nearest to Sulawesi, center of diversity for species in the family ๐‘‡๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘–๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘’

Sarangani, in fact, is only less than two hundred kilometers from Sangihe Island, home to another Tarsier species, the Sangihe Tarsier

The Sangihe Islands and Sulawesi are home to another genus of Tarsiers altogether, genus ๐‘‡๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘ข๐‘ . The relationship between this genus and the Davao Occidental Tarsier population is still subject for further research.

We are also still gathering local stories, beliefs, and customs surrounding this wonder of Davao Occidental's natural heritage

Share with us the stories you grew up with about the Emmรฉs/Mal/Amag/Woruseh!

(Note: In an earlier version of this post, the Sangil word identified was 'bombokoh,' which turns out to be the word for owl. We thank the community for the feedback!)

Davao Occidental: Wonders of Heritage

Through the leadership of its Provincial Tourism Office, Davao Occidental continues to elevate and promote the creativity of its cultural communitiesโ€”bringing greater visibility to traditions and skills passed through generations.

From the provinceโ€™s Katutubo Dolls, recognised among the countryโ€™s outstanding tourism souvenirs at the DOT-ATOP Pearl Awards, to its rich embroidery traditions and the intricate use of nito in handcrafted bags, each creation carries the identity, artistry, and living heritage of Davao Occidental.

Led by Provincial Tourism Chief Ms. Anna Christine Bautista, this advocacy now finds a new platform through collaboration with the Kabilin Digital Initiative, bringing the creations and stories of Davao Occidentalโ€™s cultural communities to the Filipino diaspora and wider audiences in Australia.

From Davao Occidental to Melbourneโ€”creativity flows, and the wonders of heritage live on.

TINGNAN | LIGTAS ANG LAGING L!STO โš ๏ธ

Maging maagap, may alam, at handang-handa.
Maging L!STO para sa pamilya, para sa bayan.

Para sa anumang pagkakataon na kailangan ng tulong, tumawag lamang sa 911.
