The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region VIII urged Local Government Units (LGUs) to strengthen local leadership in promoting peace, public safety, and disaster resilience during PAG-ATAMAN 2026: Regional Summit on Safety, Peace, and Order held on August 6, 2026, at Summit Hotel, Tacloban City, in partnership with the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) and the Regional Management Coordinating Committee (RMCC).

Addressing provincial governors, city and municipal mayors, local chief executives, government agencies, and other stakeholders, Regional Director Arnel M. Agabe emphasized that safer communities are built through proactive governance and prevention—not merely emergency response.

"Community safety is not simply about responding to emergencies—it is about preparing for them before they happen. Safer communities are not built by chance. They are built through leadership."

RD Agabe highlighted Eastern Visayas' improving peace and order performance of the region, while reminding participants that disasters, illegal drugs, and other public safety concerns continue to require sustained collaboration among LGUs, law enforcement agencies, and development partners.

He also discussed the DILG's Safer Cities and Communities Initiative and Safer School Zones Initiative, encouraging LGUs to strengthen local ordinances, empower Barangay Tanods, maximize data for evidence-based decision-making, and foster stronger inter-agency partnerships to create communities where families feel safe and protected.

Concluding the discussion, RD Agabe challenged local leaders to transform policies into meaningful action for their constituents.

"When communities are safe, development follows. When people feel secure, they participate. And when local governance is responsive, trust grows."
