Kalibo Air Quality Remains Safe on New Year’s Day, KUNAK Monitoring Data Reveal
by: Raymond J. Sucgang

KALIBO, Aklan —
Readings from the KUNAK Air Monitoring Station indicate that air conditions in Kalibo on New Year’s Day stayed within normal and acceptable levels, despite earlier increases in pollution linked to holiday activities.

Data show that particulate matter (PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅), total suspended particulates, sulfur dioxide, ozone, and volatile organic compounds on January 1 were well below the limits set by national air quality standards. Environmental analysts point to the long hours of rainfall on New Year’s Eve as a key factor in the improved air conditions, as rain helps remove pollutants from the atmosphere.

In contrast, the monitoring station recorded temporary surges in particulate matter on December 30, 2025. Elevated levels of PM₁₀, PM₂.₅, and total suspended particulates were observed, which are believed to be associated with fireworks displays and intensified pre–New Year human activities in Kalibo. Such short-lived pollution spikes are commonly documented during festive periods in urban areas.

Separately, an unusual increase in sulfur dioxide concentrations on November 25 was detected. This event is likely connected to emissions from the eruption of Mount Kanlaon, highlighting how volcanic activity can influence air quality even at some distance.

The KUNAK Air Monitoring Station, launched on August 15, 2025, provides minute-by-minute measurements of air pollutants and noise levels. The facility is the result of a collaboration among the Kalibo local government, the Laudato Si Aklan Wing, West Point Technologies, and the Diocese of Kalibo’s Ministry of Ecology, and is expected to play an important role in strengthening environmental monitoring, public awareness, and evidence-based policymaking in Aklan.

KUNAK Air Monitoring Station Begins Tracking Kalibo’s Air Quality
By: Raymond J. Sucgang, Laudato Si-Aklan Wing

Kalibo, Aklan — The newly established KUNAK Air Monitoring Station in Kalibo is now fully operational, continuously measuring air quality every minute to help protect public health and the environment.

Formally inaugurated and blessed on August 14, 2025, the KUNAK system is a joint initiative of the Local Government Unit of Kalibo, Laudato Si Aklan Wing, West Point Technologies, and the Ministry of Ecology of the Diocese of Kalibo.

From September 3 to 25, 2025, results showed that Kalibo’s air quality remains within the DENR Clean Air Act standards (DAO 2000-81):

Ozone (O₃): Averaged 30 µg/m³ – below the 140 µg/m³ limit. High ozone can irritate the lungs and worsen asthma.

Particulate Matter (PM₂.₅/PM₁₀): Median values of 8 and 10 µg/m³, respectively – well within safe levels. Fine particles can cause heart and lung diseases.

Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂): 150 µg/m³ – within the allowable 24-hour limit; known to trigger respiratory irritation and acid rain.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Averaged 40 µg/m³ – occasional peaks linked to fuel and household emissions.

Total Particulate Carbon (TPC): 75 µg/m³ – composed of organic and black carbon that affect both health and climate.

The project aligns with Pope Francis’ Laudato Si, promoting the fusion of faith and science in caring for the common home. Continuous monitoring will guide future policies toward cleaner, healthier air for Aklanons.

LOOK: LGU KALIBO JOINS TREE PLANTING ACTIVITY IN CELEBRATION OF AKLAN ARBOR DAY 2025

In celebration of Aklan Arbor Day 2025, the Local Government Unit of Kalibo proudly joined a collaborative tree planting activity along Diversion Road, Brgy. Tigayon, Kalibo, Aklan. Together with the Aklan Provincial Agriculture Office, Kalibo Municipal Agriculture Office, Barangay Council of Tigayon, Bureau of Fire Protection, and other committed private individuals, we successfully planted 100 Talisay trees to help restore and protect our environment.

This initiative is in line with Republic Act No. 10176, otherwise known as the Arbor Day Act of 2012, which mandates all provinces, cities, and municipalities to designate a specific day for tree planting—recognizing the vital role of trees in maintaining ecological balance and safeguarding the people’s right to a healthy environment. Likewise, under General Ordinance No. 006, Series of 2014 of the Provincial Government of Aklan, the synchronized Arbor Day celebration is observed every third Friday of August.

This joint effort is a clear testament to our shared advocacy for the continued protection, restoration, and preservation of our natural resources—ensuring that future generations will inherit a greener, healthier, and more sustainable Kalibo. 🌳💚

LOOK: In collaboration with the Kalibo Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) personnel and KASAMA, researchers from the University of the Philippines Visayas, under the guidance of their professors, conducted site sampling as part of an ongoing research study on marine fungi in the Philippines.

Kalibo, recognized for its rich biodiversity, was selected as one of the key sampling locations for this national study. On July 21, 2025, sampling activities were carried out at two significant ecological sites: the Bakhawan Eco-Park in Barangay New Buswang and Jetty Port area in Barangay Pook, Kalibo, Aklan.

During the activity, researchers collected dried sticks and tree branches from both locations as potential substrates for marine fungi. These samples will be analyzed in the UP Visayas laboratory in Iloilo City to identify and document the marine fungi species present in Kalibo’s coastal environment.

This research initiative supports efforts to better understand marine fungal diversity in the country and highlights Kalibo’s vital role in marine ecosystem studies.
