KIANGAN MOURNS THE PASSING OF WWII VETERAN AND FIRST DEPED-CAR REGIONAL DIRECTOR PEDRO D. INDUNAN

HIGHLIGHT | Honoring the Life and Legacy of Director Pedro D. Indunan

Kiangan, Ifugao continues to honor the life and legacy of Pedro Dinaon Indunan, who passed away on June 18, 2026, at the age of 100. He was Kiangan's last surviving World War II veteran, the first Regional Director of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports–Cordillera Administrative Region (DECS-CAR), and the composer of the Batanes Provincial Hymn, "Beautiful Batanes Isles."

As a young radioman during World War II, Indunan served alongside Filipino guerrillas in the fight against Japanese occupation. He was among those who witnessed the historic events surrounding the surrender of Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamash*ta in Kiangan on September 2, 1945, a defining moment that secured Kiangan's place in Philippine and world history.

When the war ended, his service to the nation continued through education. Rising through the ranks from Division Supervisor of the former Benguet, Ifugao, Apayao, and Kalinga (BIAK) Division, he helped implement the Ifugao Pilot Opportunity School of Agriculture (IPOSA) beginning in 1961. In April 1988, he became the first Regional Director of DECS-CAR, where he helped lay the foundation of the Cordillera's regional education system until his retirement in 1990.

His contributions extended beyond education. While serving as Schools Division Superintendent in Batanes, he composed "Beautiful Batanes Isles," which was adopted as the official Provincial Hymn of Batanes in 2024. In 2025, the Provincial Government of Ifugao honored him through Resolution No. 2025-246 in recognition of his historic and enduring contributions as a soldier, educator, and composer.

Director Pedro D. Indunan was laid to rest on June 24, 2026. Although he is no longer with us, his extraordinary century of courage, patriotism, leadership, and public service remains a lasting inspiration to the people of Kiangan, the Cordillera, and the entire nation.

Rest in peace, Director Pedro D. Indunan. Your legacy lives on.
