SARANGANI PROVINCE, 06 May 2026โMembers of the Malungon Inland Fish Farmers Association (MIFFA) completed a two-day hands-on training on fish processing and value-addition held on 4-5 May 2026 in the Municipality of Malungon. The activity was spearheaded by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Special Area for Agricultural Development Program Phase 2 SOCCSKSARGEN - Provincial Program Management Support Office of Sarangani (BFAR SAAD SOCCSKSARGEN PPMSO SarangSARANGANI PROVINCE, 06 May 2026โMembers of the Malungon Inland Fish Farmers Association (MIFFA) completed a two-day hands-on training on fish processing and value-addition held on 4-5 May 2026 in the Municipality of Malungon. The activity was spearheaded by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Special Area for Agricultural Development Program Phase 2 SOCCSKSARGEN - Provincial Program Management Support Office of Sarangani (BFAR SAAD SOCCSKSARGEN PPMSO Sarang ).
Designed to strengthen livelihoods, the training enabled beneficiaries to produce value-added catfish products, including embutido, nuggets, siomai, and chorizo. By applying food safety standards, proper handling and packaging, and basic product costing, participants improved product quality and increased market readiness.
MIFFA members recognized the value of turning their catfish harvests into marketable products, with some selling goods during the activity, boosting their confidence to pursue processing as a sustainable income source.
To maintain momentum, Municipal Veterinarian Fritz Gerald Doco emphasized that applying Good Manufacturing Practices and food safety standards is essential to sustain production and ensure consumer trust. Mr. Roel C. Marabulas of PPMSO Sarangani further highlighted that strong product quality and branding are necessary for local products to compete in the market.
Adding to these points, Municipal Agriculturist Atty. King Lloyd Abellado acknowledged the continued support of the SAAD program, noting that such interventions can generate additional income for the association. He encouraged members to apply what they learned beyond the training.
Throughout the two days, the training combined lectures on food safety with hands-on demonstrations, enabling participants to collaboratively prepare, package, and set prices for products based on costs and profit margins.ons.
Armed with new processing skills, MIFFA members are poised to secure a more sustainable livelihood by expanding catfish production into market-ready goods.
