What began as a childhood passion for gardening has blossomed into a thriving urban farming enterprise that is now helping promote sustainable food production and urban agriculture in the Philippines.

For Christian "Kian" Castaneda, founder of Organikian Urban Farm, his love for plants started at an early age, tending gardens alongside his parents. Years later, while working in Qatar in 2010, he rekindled that passion and ventured into hydroponics, determined to explore innovative ways of growing food despite limited space.

The Department of Agriculture - Regional Field Office XII (DA-RFO XII), through its Organic Agriculture Program (OAP), strengthened the capabilities of Participatory Guarantee System – Organic Certifying Bodies (PGS-OCBs) from the provinces of South Cotabato and Cotabato through a three-day Capability Building conducted on July 21–23, 2026, at Sarangani Highlands, General Santos City.

Isang mahalagang hakbang ang muling naisakatuparan sa pagsusulong ng organikong agrikultura sa Sultan Kudarat sa pamamagitan ng isinagawang Coaching and Mentoring Towards Organic Certification ng Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office XII, Organic Agriculture Program para sa Sustainable Industry for Competent and Advance Farming (SIKAF) Group, na binubuo ng mga magsasaka mula sa mga bayan ng Esperanza, Bagumbayan, at President Quirino, na isinagawa mula Hulyo 14–17, 2026.

Ang aktibidad ay isinagawa sa pakikipagtulungan sa Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) ng Sultan Kudarat at sa mga Local Government Units (LGUs) ng Esperanza, Bagumbayan, at President Quirino, na nagpapakita ng matibay na ugnayan ng pambansa at lokal na pamahalaan sa pagtataguyod ng ligtas, de-kalidad, at napapanatiling produksyon ng organikong pagkain.

Sa isinagawang coaching at mentoring, masusing tinalakay ang mga natukoy na findings mula sa isinagawang Pre-Assessment ng bawat miyembro ng grupo. Inilahad din ang mga kaukulang rekomendasyon at corrective actions upang matugunan ang mga naitalang kakulangan at matiyak ang pagsunod sa mga pamantayan ng Philippine National Standards (PNS) for Organic Agriculture.

Bukod dito, binigyang-diin ang step-by-step na proseso ng pag-aaplay para sa Participatory Guarantee System – Organic Certifying Body (PGS-OCB) certification, kabilang ang mga kinakailangang dokumento at farm records, upang maging handa ang grupo sa pormal na certification process.

Sa pamamagitan ng aktibidad na ito, higit pang napalalim ang kaalaman at kahandaan ng mga magsasaka sa tamang pagpapatupad ng organikong pamantayan at sa kanilang layuning maging isa sa mga kinikilalang PGS-OCB sa Lalawigan ng Sultan Kudarat. Ang sertipikasyong ito ay hindi lamang magbibigay ng kredibilidad sa kanilang mga organikong produkto kundi magbubukas din ng mas maraming oportunidad sa merkado at magpapalakas sa kanilang samahan bilang mga tagapagtaguyod ng organikong agrikultura.

The ATI-RTC XII is looking for farm partners and youth interns for the next batch of the Youth Internship Program on Organic Farming (YIPOA).

YIPOA is a highly specialized internship program designed to instill and develop in the trainees an appreciation for organic agriculture (OA). The program is a collaborative effort between the DA-NOAP and the DA-ATI.
