As a result of the combined effects of recent tropical cyclones and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), the local government of La Trinidad has declared a State of Calamity.

According to Sangguniang Bayan Resolution No. 374-2026 and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) Resolution No. 5-2026, the town recorded an astounding 1,558.4 millimeters (mm) of rainfall from August 3 to 11, 2026.

The heaviest downpour occurred on August 8, receiving 382.5 mm of rain in a single day.

This triggered massive landslides and catastrophic flooding, severely damaging roads and public infrastructure like schools, while causing major disruption to local livelihoods.

As of August 12, total estimated damage costs reached β‚±78.4 million for both public and private infrastructure, including agricultural losses.

Meanwhile, 837 farmers and 104 families comprising 411 individuals have been reported as severely affected.

Hazard incidents reached a total of 101, including landslides (22), soil erosion (38), flooding (18), fallen trees (20), and sinking areas (3).

Continuous rock fall also forced temporary road closures in barangays Ambiong and Beckel.

On top of this, 62 pigs died due to African Swine Fever, which led to the depopulation of 221 pigs within the infected areas, resulting in losses valued at β‚±464,000.

Mayor Roderick Awingan shared that prior to and during the onslaught, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) ran on a 24/7 schedule, with municipal employees on rotating shifts.

All sixteen Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (BDRRMCs) were likewise fully activated to monitor their respective areas.

Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) teams were deployed to ground zero, while search-and-rescue operations alongside road and tree-clearing activities were also carried out immediately.

With the administration deep in disaster response and exhausting its resources, the declaration unlocks the municipality’s Quick Response Fund (QRF), imposes a price freeze on basic commodities, and further supports rehabilitation and recovery efforts.
