The Benguet State University, through the Institute of 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑭𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚 (IHFSA), and 𝒀𝒊𝒎 𝑪𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 conducted a consultation meeting at the Research and Extension Building.

The consultation aimed to discuss the University's coffee-related training programs and explore opportunities for collaboration. During the meeting, Mr. James Yim, Founder of Yim Coffee, presented their proposed partnership, which includes student internships, community extension, and research activities.

Consequently, a tentative schedule for a site assessment and training program was set for October 2026 in support of the sustainable development of the coffee industry. 𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑜𝑛!

The 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑭𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚 (𝑰𝑯𝑭𝑺𝑨), Benguet State University , in collaboration with 𝑶𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑬𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔 (𝑶𝑬𝑺) implemented its activity on project titled “𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐎𝐆𝐁𝐎-𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦)“.

On Day 1 (July 21), the team conducted a seminar-workshop titled “𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠” at Banaue, Ifugao. The activity involved lectures on Reforestation and Agroforestry Systems, followed by a farm mapping activity by the participants.

On Day 2 (July 22), the team also conducted a seminar-workshop titled “𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐔𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 (𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐓 𝟒)” at Bontoc, Mt. Province. The activity consisted of a lecture on Small Agrofruit Livelihood Technology followed by a farm mapping activity by the participants.

The program will continue to support the beneficiaries through coffee and fruit seedlings in the next phase of implementation, promoting sustainable livelihoods, environmental conservation, and community resilience. 𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑜𝑛!

The 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑦 (𝐼𝐻𝐹𝑆𝐴), Benguet State University successfully conducted its first 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (𝐂𝐏𝐃) - 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 titled “𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝟏𝟎𝟏: 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭”.

The two-day training seminar covered the Coffee species and its agroclimatic requirements, morphological identification of Arabica coffee varieties, coffee propagation methods, and nursery management. The lecture was delivered by the resource persons, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐕𝐨𝐧 𝐘. 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐨 and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐆𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐚 𝐒. 𝐃𝐚𝐬-𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧, who shared their expertise and practical knowledge on Arabica coffee production.

The training was attended by participants from various government agencies, higher education institutions, and other stakeholders engaged in the coffee industry.

As part of the hands-on training, the participants successfully sorted seeds and sowed Arabica coffee seeds, and successfully pricked out at least 300 coffee seedlings, allowing them to apply the concepts discussed.

Through such initiatives, the Benguet State University through Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry remains committed to strengthening the knowledge and technical competencies of coffee practitioners, extension workers, and other stakeholders in support of the sustainable development of Philippine coffee industry. The 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑦 (𝐼𝐻𝐹𝑆𝐴), Benguet State University together with 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒚𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒏 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆 conducted its first activity on the project titled “𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐲𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐑𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧” on June 29-30, 2026 at San Pablo Seminary, Crystal Cave Rd., Bakakeng Central, Baguio City.

The 2-day training-seminar covered fundamentals of Arabica coffee production, including Arabica coffee species, field preparation and management, and coffee berry borer management. The participants applied their gained knowledge by rejuvenating existing Arabica coffee trees. Also, making and installing their own lure traps for coffee berry borer management and monitoring in their farm.

By the end of the activity, the team successfully rejuvenated 𝟒𝟓 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 and installed 𝟖 𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐬.

The project will continue to be monitored to assess the rejuvenated coffee, while the planting of additional Arabica coffee seedlings is scheduled as the project moves forward. 𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑜𝑛!

The 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑦 (𝐼𝐻𝐹𝑆𝐴), Benguet State University together with 𝐷𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑤𝑎 𝐸𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒𝑠 𝐼𝑛𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 conducted its 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 at Ay-ay, Ampusongan, Bakun, Benguet.

The activity aimed to demonstrate best practices on field preparation, planting, and disseminate proper care and management of newly planted Arabica coffee. During the activity, the team successfully carried out field preparation through spot terracing at 3-meter planting distance and planted 90 𝑨𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒄𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 at the planting site.

The project will continue to be monitored to assess the growth and establishment of the coffee seedlings scheduled for the fourth quarter of the year. 𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑜𝑛!

The 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑦 (𝐼𝐻𝐹𝑆𝐴), Benguet State University successfully conducted its 𝐏𝐫𝐞-𝐈𝐧𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 at IHFSA-Bektey, Longlong, Puguis, Benguet.

The activity aimed to enhance research outputs, strengthen collaboration, and enhance the research capability of IHFSA personnel. Specifically to evaluate completed and on-going research studies under the Institute, categorize and finalize the list of researches to be presented during AIHR; and mentor junior researchers.

A total of 𝟑𝟓 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔 were presented during the review. The activity also benefited from valuable insights, comments, and recommendations provided by the esteemed evaluators and participants, which will contribute to the improvement and refinement of the research outputs. 𝑃𝑎𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑜𝑛!

The event kicked off with a warm welcome to our new interns from various universities and BSU colleges, followed by an energetic, health-boosting “Pazumba ni Rootcrops” session to get everyone moving! 💃🥔

Continuous since mid-2024, this monthly initiative serves as a vital space for our R&E family to foster work-life balance and holistic well-being, firmly aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being.

The Benguet State University thru the Institute of Highland Farming Systems and Agroforestry (IHFSA) joined the Technical Review Workshop on Robusta Coffee. The workshop aimed to validate and strengthen the technical, operational, financial, engineering, and market assumptions of the proposed enterprise of the Conner Multipurpose Cooperative (COMPCO).
