This Bonifacio Day, we continue the call for accountability and justice in a system that has long deprived the people of accessible, quality education.

Across the country, universities suffer from deliberate underfunding, leaving classrooms overcrowded, facilities deteriorating, and learning spaces unsafe. At the same time, unregulated tuition and miscellaneous fee increases in many institutions show how education has been shaped by neoliberal policiesโ€”treated as a private commodity rather than a public right.

Both realities come from the same root: a neoliberal education system sustained by bureaucratic interests, where profit, prestige, and political capital are prioritized over the peopleโ€™s welfare.

This November 30, we rise to challenge the system that feeds on exploitation and denies the youth the education they deserve.

๐Ÿ•บARE YOU READY TO CHA CHA?๐Ÿ’ƒ

A political crisis has been brewing among the ranks of public officials in the Philippine government. This is what is called Charter Change or โ€œCha-Chaโ€๐Ÿ˜Ÿ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

This has been fueling conflicts between the upper and lower houses of the Congress, as well as a groundswell of public clamor from civil society. The main point of contention โ€” in the face of all the pressing problems of our country, why is the push for Cha-Cha becoming more prioritized? Whose interest exactly does this Cha-Cha serve?๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜ค

All the while, the socioeconomic crisis continues to destroy the average Filipinoโ€™s livelihood and pushes us further away from our civil rights. The Filipinoโ€™s most pressing problems, such as the continuous skyrocketing prices of basic commodities and services and the push for neoliberal policies like the PUV Modernization Program, still persist.

In the education sector, we are not safe from this crisis. In our schools, there persists misrepresentation of students and education stakeholders and the neglect of education stakeholdersโ€™ rights and welfare; increasing tuition fees, insufficient wages, and nearly abject job opportunities; and the continuous lack of student support services.

With this, Kabataan Partylist Cebu, along with allied organizations, is currently organizing a gathering entitled "Chacha Against Cha-Cha: Dance the Marcos-Duterte Regime Away!" to be held on April 1, 2024 (Monday) at 5PM-8PM. The event aims to provide an avenue for civil rights advocates to mingle, connect, and unite against Cha-Cha.

THE FIGHT OF EDSA LIVES ON!
PROTEST @ FUENTE OSMEร‘A, 9am - February 25

TEKNOYS REMEMBER EDSA! JOIN ANAKBAYAN CIT-U! - bit.ly/JoinABCITU

Anakbayan - CIT-U calls on the Technologian student body to remember the fight of the People Power Uprising. In the midst of great state repression, the people did not cower in fear as they poured millions into the streets in order to overthrow the fascist Marcos regime.

As early as the 70s, the Kabataang Makabayan and Samahang Demokratiko ng Kabataan organized in CIT-U in order to launch protests and strikes against the ruling Marcos regime which at that point had begun to show its true repressive colors. In 1983, the CIT Alliance of Concerned Technologians led boycotts in December and strikes in March which led to the Battle of CIT in March 1983 which injured many after security guards hit a student with a baton.

Anakbayan - CIT-U remembers the likes of James Orbe, Ramon Michael Doong, Arnulfo Ortiz and many more Technologians who died in the struggle as early as the 70s and 80s to pave way for the people to overthrow the Marcos fascist regime.

Many of these street barricades reached Cebu, such as those in Fuente Osmeรฑa, Freedom Park, Carbon Market, US Consulate, Cebu Provincial Capitol, Katipunan St., and the likes.

TEKNOYS AGAINST CHARTER CHANGE - OUR EDUCATION, MASS MEDIA, PUBLIC UTILITIES AND OUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE!
A Statement

FIGHT CHARTER CHANGE! JOIN ANAKBAYAN CIT-U! - bit.ly/JoinABCITU
_

Anakbayan - CIT expresses its firmest conviction that the Charter Change is an anti-people, anti-poor and anti-nationalist move that the Marcos Jr. regime wants to make. It is not new, given that Charter Change was also pushed by former administrations. Charter change will only worsen the current system of education, land reform, mass media and public utilities and services by giving these to large imperialist corporations.

If the charter change were to be signed by the president, it is likely that by allowing foreign businesses to enter the Philippine educational system, the competition between local and foreign firms would drive tuition fees up. The students can only expect added burdens on tuition and other school fee increases from this Charter Change.

Furthermore, foreigners will be allowed to have 100% ownership over mass media, public utilities and Filipino land. The Charter Change, which instead of promoting a national economic policy, will instead promote a policy of subservience to foreign economic masters.

Finally, the President and Vice President will be voted in tandem, with two terms of five years - a president can rule the Philippines for a decade alongside other officials who can rule for longer terms.

Anakbayan - CIT-U stands against this Charter Change. We call on the Technologian student body to study, learn and criticize the changes in our constitution and advance the national-democratic struggle against the Marcos and Duterte cliques which are now infighting over political rule in the Philippines.

Save our Schools! Stop Lumad Killings!

Three years ago yesterday, the Lumad Bakwit school of USC as well as volunteer teachers were violently raided by the PNP Central Visayas (PRO 7) who were seeking sanctuary in the University of San Carlos - Talamban Campus. 26 of them were arrested.

Anakbayan - CIT expresses its strongest condemnation of the event.

The Lumad are the national minorities - indigenous peoples of Mindanao. They are also one of the most marginalized by large mining corporations and logging concessions which have destroyed and taken over their ancestral land. They have evacuated from their highly militarized communities where thousands have died under the dictatorial rule of the AFP.

The AFP, under the payroll of large mining and logging concessions, expose their role as mercenaries in protecting these big capitalists instead of serving the interests of the people.

Anakbayan - CIT stands with our Lumad brothers and sisters! Stop the Lumad Killings! Save our Schools!

Condemn Militarization - in the Campus or Hinterlands!

JOIN THE PACT! - https://bit.ly/JoinPACT-CIT

The Progressive Alliance of Concerned Technologians (PACT - CIT) remembers the Bakwit school raid which happened yesterday three years ago. As Technologians, we are not the last in the fight against militarization.

Ramon Michael Doong was killed by security guards in 1970 for participating in a student protest. The Alliance of Concerned Technologians held protests which were repressed by CIT-U security guards which led to the Battle of CIT in March 1984.

Lumad communities have been the victims of grave militarization throughout the years. The literacy schools of the Tribal Filipino Program of Surigao del Sur, ALCADEV, Program for Mamanwa Integrated Services for Development and the likes alongside even missionary and church groups such as the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines - NMR have been actively vilified as โ€œNPAโ€ schools or โ€œillegalโ€ schools.

Teachers being stopped at mobile checkpoints, illegally searched, questioned and harassed have become โ€œnormalโ€ occurrences. School grounds are surrounded by armed military men, students interrogated and teachers are accused about being members of the NPA.

In July 2009, the TRIFPSS school in Surigao del Sur was closed down when residents were forced to evacuate due to the encampment of the 58th IBPA. In November 2015, the ALCADEV teachersโ€™ cottage and its nursery was burned down to the ground by the military. In September of 2016, another school was ransacked with books, school equipment and structures damaged.

Extrajudicial killings have also been frequent throughout Lumad communities.

Our struggle against campus militarization in the 1980s and repression is not so far from the struggle of the Lumads against the militarization of their communities. The killings and terror against Lumad national minorities is a violation of human rights. PACT - CIT stands with our Lumad brothers and sisters: Save our Schools! Stop Lumad Killings!

ICYMI: Anakbayan CIT-U along with other militant groups under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan - Central Visayas, braved the heat and the downpour of rain in the streets of Cebu on September 21, 2023 as we commemorate the 51st anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.

Today, the US-Marcos II-Duterte administration is taking out of the Marcos Sr. playbook its old autocratic way of ruling as it abets a Marcosian leadership: 95,000 victims of human rights violations, which translates to two victims per day from June 30, 2022 to present, and if it's not the bullets that kill, it's the deplorable living conditions โ€“ low wages, mass unemployment, food insecurity, inaccessible social services. Armed with militant conviction, we vow to continue the fight towards just and lasting peace and to dismantle the old, rotting system responsible for the Filipino people's oppression and exploitation.

THE STUDENTS WILL COME BACK AGAIN, AND AGAIN... AND AGAIN!

In the face of crisis and unrest - high tuition and other fees increase, low wages, soaring prices of commodities and social services, fighting in the defense of their interests and the interests of the broad masses is the youth in their millions. The youth movement is sure to advance further as the crisis worsens and the conditions for change ripen.

History is witness to the youths' undefeatable power once it struggles in collective effort alongside the ranks of workers and farmers, and the broad masses of the exploited poor! Only through militant struggle can the best in youth shall emerge!

SULBARON ANG KRISIS SA KAPANGINABUHIAN, KATUNGOD, UG KAUGALINGNAN!

Unity Statement
Cebu United Peopleโ€™s SONA

Sa kasamtangan, sunod-sunod ang mga aplikasyon para sa tuition and other school fees increase (TOSFI) sa mga tunghaan, sama sa University of Cebu, University of San Carlos, University of San Jose - Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation, ug Cebu Institute of Technology - Universityโ€“parehong mga mayor nga unibersidad sa Sugbo.

1. Nasudnong minimum nga suholan nga nakasubay sa family living wage
2. Pagundang sa kontraktwalisasyon
3. Pagpaubos sa presyo sa batakang palaliton
4. Pampublikong serbisyo, dili negosyo
5. Aksesible ug dekalidad nga edukasyon
6. Disente ug abot-kayang pabalay
7. Pagundang sa reklamasyon
8. Pagundang sa jeepney phaseout
8. Pagrespeto sa mga demokratikong katungod

ON THE OCCASION OF MYLES ALBASINโ€™S 27TH BIRTHDAY BEHIND BARS! STILL NO JUSTICE!

Myles Albasin. Human rights defender. Activist. Political Prisoner. The 21st of March marks Myles' 27th birthday, her fifth birthday as a political prisoner. As a UP Cebu graduate, Myles had the luxury to live a comfortable life but instead chose the road less traveled, one which would entail more sacrifices. One does not advance in comfort, that is something she religiously lives by. As a student, Myles was involved in the struggle of the marginalized peasant sector. She has the humanity to study the conditions of the farmers on the ground. Millions of farmers still do not own the land they till, while others are forced to become farm workers, living off very meager income. Haciendas and monopolization of land still dominate the agricultural landscape. Feudalism is their thousand-year curse. It is for the reasons mentioned that Myles, in her selfless act of sacrifice, chose to stay with the poorest of the poor in the countryside, and moved by great feelings of love for the marginalized masses, devoted her life to the struggle.

On March 3, 2018, Myles along with five other young activists was arrested for trumped-up charges. Claiming that there was an encounter, but residents in the area denied such an incident.

It has been five years, and there is still no justice for Myles. It has been five long years, testament to the blatant disregard of human rights and due process by the elements of the state. All these paper tigers will fold and crumble at the uproar of the masses. A woman with conviction like Myles will shake a corrupt state. No court can genuinely pass on judgment, for her and her companionsโ€™ vindication lies in their struggle for National Democracy. Myles has inspired the youth to take the struggle for our democratic rights to the picket lines, streets, mustering the support of the masses and to amplify the message of those who have something to say.

Myles, you have inspired the youth to fight and resist the chains that bind us, and each day, fissures start to form. It is paper against the collective strength of the people. On your birthday we wish for your freedom, freedom of your companions, and freedom of all toiling masses under the rabid claws of Imperialism, Feudalism, and Bureaucrat Capitalism. Until then, dugang kadasig, kauban!
