𝗗𝗧𝗜 𝗜𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗢𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝘀 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧 𝗘𝗡𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗢𝗢

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Ilocos Norte successfully conducted the 2-day Product Enhancement and Diversification on Bamboo on May 25–26, 2026, in Brgy. Uguis, Nueva Era and Brgy. Balatong, Laoag City. The activity brought together bamboo weavers and growers from the said municipalities to strengthen their knowledge, skills, and appreciation for the growing potential of the bamboo industry.

Resource speakers Dr. Charlie B. Batin, Dean of CAFSD MMSU and Bamboo Focal, and Mr. Bonne Jovi J. Orteza, OIC of the Bamboo Research, Training and Processing Center of MMSU, shared valuable discussions on the accomplishments, activities, and partnerships of the MMSU Bamboo Center, rehabilitation of bamboo clumps, bamboo propagation, and the versatility of bamboo and its many uses and benefits.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jeffrey Tumumba, one of the designers of the Bamboo Processing Center, conducted a demonstration on the proper use of machines and equipment from the Shared Service Facilities (SSF) of DTI, providing participants with practical learning experiences to further improve bamboo processing and product development.

More than a training, the activity became an opportunity for local bamboo weavers and growers to learn from one another, exchange experiences, and continue promoting sustainable livelihood and community development through bamboo. 🌿🤝

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Ilocos Norte Provincial Office successfully conducted the second run of the Capacity Building on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Physico-Chemical Testing for Salt-Producing MSMEs in Ilocos Norte in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Ilocos Norte.

The activity forms part of the government’s continuing initiatives to strengthen and modernize the local salt industry by enhancing product quality, ensuring food safety compliance, and improving the competitiveness and sustainability of salt-producing MSMEs in the province.

The training aimed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills in implementing standard Good Manufacturing Practices and adopting best practices in salt production. The activity benefitted four (4) salt makers’ associations in Ilocos Norte, namely: the Pagsanahan Salt Producers Association of Badoc, the Tagaan Salt Makers Association and Agsasik Salt Producers Association of Currimao, and the Callaguip Association of Salt Makers of Ilocos Norte from Paoay.

Mr. Kenneth P. Siruet once again served as the resource speaker, discussing essential topics on GMP and Physico-chemical Testing. The activity was facilitated and supervised by Ms. Clyde Beth Caraang, both from DOST Ilocos Norte.

The training concluded successfully with the active participation and engagement of the attendees, particularly during the workshop sessions where participants identified and shared practical measures and best practices that they can adopt within their respective associations to further improve the quality, safety, and production efficiency of their salt products.

DTI Ilocos Norte’s CPD IN Palengke reached the Banna Public Market on May 21, 2026, together with the LGU of Banna and its Local Price Coordinating Council. This fourth rollout for 2026 continues to bring consumer protection closer to the people.

Highlights:
• 65 business establishments checked for compliance
• 8 defective weighing scales seized during Operation Timbangan
• 58 consumers engaged through advocacy activities
• On-site Consumer Welfare Desk for complaints and inquiries
• Negosyo Center Help Desk assisting MSMEs with advisory and loan queries

On May 20, 2026, the Department of Trade and Industry- Ilocos Norte Provincial Office, in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Adams, successfully conducted the Product Enhancement Training on Adams Coffee at Cardom's Farm, Adams, Ilocos Norte.

The training aimed to deepen the participants’ understanding of coffee and its growing industry by discussing the fundamentals of coffee production and appreciation. Topics included the rich history of coffee, the different coffee varieties, bean characteristics, processing methods, and the various waves of coffee that have shaped consumer preferences and market trends worldwide. Participants were also introduced to the importance of quality control, proper handling and processing, and value-adding practices that contribute to producing premium coffee products.

Through the knowledge and insights gained from the activity, participants are expected to further enhance the quality, consistency, and competitiveness of their existing coffee beans and products. The training also highlighted the potential of Adams coffee as a distinctive local product with promising market opportunities, encouraging coffee growers and stakeholders to continuously innovate and adopt industry standards and best practices.

The training was facilitated by Mr. Michael A. Hernando, Head Instructor of One Coffee Studio, who generously shared his expertise, industry experiences, and practical knowledge on coffee production and product development.

This initiative reflects the continued commitment of DTI Ilocos Norte and the LGU of Adams in supporting local coffee producers and promoting the growth and sustainability of the local coffee industry.

DTI Ilocos Norte successfully conducted the Capacity Building on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Physico-Chemical Testing for salt-producing MSMEs in Ilocos Norte in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Ilocos Norte. The activity forms part of the government’s continuing efforts to strengthen the local salt industry by improving product quality, food safety standards, and the competitiveness of local salt producers.

The training provided participants with practical knowledge on the proper implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), including sanitation, proper handling and processing procedures, quality assurance, and compliance with food safety standards. Discussions on physico-chemical testing also enhanced the participants’ understanding of the importance of laboratory analysis in ensuring the quality, purity, and safety of salt products intended for the market.

Mr. Kenneth P. Siruet served as the resource speaker and shared valuable insights on GMP standards, quality control measures, and the significance of physico-chemical testing in improving salt production processes. Participants actively engaged in workshop activities and discussions related to their operations, allowing them to better appreciate the value of adopting standardized practices. The activity was supervised by Mr. Gerald Q. Gabriel.

The activity was participated in by three (3) salt-producing associations and one (1) salt processor from Ilocos Norte, namely: Mariposa Salt Makers' Association of Burgos, Ilocos Norte; Bayog Fisherfolks Association; Zanjera Cavintaran Farmers, Fisherman, and Salt Makers' Association; and Vir-Hills Integrated Farm. Their active participation reflected the commitment of local stakeholders to enhance the quality and marketability of locally produced salt products.

Through initiatives such as this, DTI Ilocos Norte continues to empower MSMEs and community-based associations through technical assistance, capability-building programs, and industry development support, while strengthening collaboration with DOST in promoting a more competitive and sustainable local salt industry.

Mr. Halen P. Gamisera, IP Rights Specialist II, discussed the importance of Intellectual Property Rights and equipped the Negosyo Center Business Counselors (NCBCs) with the necessary knowledge and guidance on IP registration and protection for MSMEs.

The “Unlocking Entrepreneurial Potential” session was facilitated by Ms. Alicia Ivy M. Bongoyan (NC-TIDS), Ms. Janice C. Maligsay (TIDS-CARP), Ms. Arianne Mae Bitanga (NC-TIDA), Mr. Louis Andrei C. Felipe (NC-TIDA), and Ms. Angelica Ramos (NCBC Vintar), encouraging participants to continue empowering entrepreneurs and strengthening negosyo development initiatives in the province.

DTI Ilocos Norte’s Check, Protect, Disseminate in Palengke (CPD in Palengke) program brought its consumer protection efforts to the Solsona Public Market on May 14, 2026, in partnership with the LGU of Solsona and its Local Price Coordinating Council. The activity monitored 66 establishments, confiscated four defective weighing scales through Operation Timbangan, and reached 59 consumers with advocacy materials, while also providing assistance via the Consumer Welfare Desk and Negosyo Center Help Desk.
