16 NABBED FOR ILLEGAL CABLE WIRE THEFT IN SAN JUAN; MINOR RESCUED

The Philippine National Police (PNP), through the joint efforts of the Eastern Police District and the San Juan City Police Station, arrested 16 individuals involved in the illegal cutting and hauling of underground copper cables in San Juan City in the early hours of May 5, 2026.

The operation was conducted at around 12:15 a.m. along Araullo Street, Barangay Addition Hills, following a tip from a concerned citizen. The suspects were caught in the act of cutting and loading the cables. Among those arrested was a 48-year-old male identified by the alias “Gabe,” while another individual believed to be the group’s leader, known as “Pipoy,” remains at large. A minor was also rescued during the operation.

Recovered from the suspects were underground copper cable wires owned by a telecommunications company with an estimated value of ₱456,159.49. Authorities also seized tools and equipment allegedly used in the activity, including a closed van, another vehicle, bolt cutters, steel bars, and other items used to access underground cable lines.

Charges for violation of Republic Act No. 10515 (Anti-Cable Television and Cable Internet Tapping Act of 2013) and theft under the Revised Penal Code are being prepared against the arrested individuals.

This operation forms part of the PNP’s intensified efforts under its Focused Agenda on Enhanced Managing Police Operations, reinforcing ongoing initiatives to protect critical infrastructure and public utilities. It also supports the broader directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure public safety and safeguard essential services.

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., commended the operating units for their swift and coordinated response.

We will continue to act on credible reports and respond quickly to protect public interest,” he said.

The PNP assures the public of its continuing commitment to responsive and people-centered policing in line with its vision of Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman.

PNP STEPS UP RESPONSE AS MAYON ACTIVITY CONTINUES

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its operations in Albay following the recent pyroclastic density current or “uson” ,which means 'dangerous' in Bicolano, from Mayon Volcano at around 5:38 PM, prioritizing the safety and security of affected communities.

Police Regional Office 5 (PRO 5) immediately deployed personnel to manage traffic along key roads, ensuring unhampered movement for emergency response. Police visibility and checkpoints were also strengthened in critical areas to prevent entry into identified danger zones and maintain public order.

On the ground, PNP personnel are assisting in the distribution of face masks and providing timely reminders on health precautions, particularly against ashfall and related hazards. Close coordination continues with local government units, the Office of Civil Defense, and disaster response offices to support evacuation, rescue, and relief efforts.

The PNP is also assisting local officials in monitoring affected areas and managing evacuation centers, ensuring the safety and orderly stay of evacuees. The activation of the KASUROG Disaster Emergency Assistance Response (D.E.A.R.) Team further strengthens rapid response and humanitarian assistance operations in the province.

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., assured the public of the organization’s full commitment to safeguarding communities affected by the volcanic activity.

He added that the PNP will sustain its presence in key areas, including Camalig, Guinobatan, and Ligao City, as part of ongoing efforts to secure communities and support government response operations.

The PNP reminds the public to stay indoors during ashfall, wear protective masks, and remain updated through official advisories. Public cooperation and vigilance remain essential to ensure everyone’s safety.

As the situation develops, the PNP reaffirms its commitment to responsive and compassionate service in line with the vision of a Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman.
