This year's global theme is "𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁." It marks two decades of World Ranger Day — twenty years of recognizing the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of rangers who stand on the frontlines protecting our natural and cultural heritage.

Rangers today work in a world shaped by rapid, complex change — escalating climate extremes, biodiversity loss, increasing human-wildlife conflict, organized wildlife crime, and shifting social and political landscapes. Through it all, rangers continue to serve as essential planetary health workers, safeguarding our future under increasingly difficult conditions.

This World Ranger Day, we honor them — and the twenty-year legacy of rangers worldwide who came before them.

Carbon Free Legazpi joins the celebration of 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲!

Now on its 𝟯𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, this year's celebration carries the theme "𝗡𝗮𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗮𝘁 𝗞𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗴 𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘀," underscoring the importance of proactive disaster risk reduction, community preparedness, and stronger collaboration between government and local communities.

The Philippines, situated within the Pacific Ring of Fire, remains no stranger to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters ; from typhoons to other calamities that test our resilience year after year. This reality calls on all of us to be more proactive and climate-adaptive, through institutionalized safety awareness and the consistent practice of safety in our homes, workplaces, and public spaces, building stronger, disaster-ready communities.

🌱 It's a wrap! 𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟴𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 now have a new home in Banquerohan!
As part of the celebration of Philippine Arbor Day 2026, the City Government of Legazpi, led by 𝗛𝗼𝗻. 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗕. 𝗜𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹, 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿, through the 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗥), successfully conducted 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲. The activity gathered participants from City Government offices, together with individual volunteers, socio-civic organizations, environmental advocates, and other community partners who shared their time and effort in support of the City's greening initiatives.

Adding to the significance of the event was the presence of 𝗛𝗼𝗻. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦. 𝗟𝗮𝗷𝗮𝗿𝗮, 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗿 and 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 of the Sangguniang Panglungsod 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, who actively participated in the outplanting activities alongside volunteers.

A total of 800 fruit-bearing seedlings, sourced from the City’s 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙎𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙃𝙪𝙗𝙨 were planted to supplement the existing vegetation in the area, which is being developed as 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘇𝗽𝗶 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗺. Over the years, the site has served as one of the City's priority reforestation areas, with sustained rehabilitation and tree-growing initiatives contributing to increased tree cover, expansion of the city’s carbon sinks, healthier environment, and greater resilience against the impacts of climate change.

Through the collective efforts of all involved, another step has been taken toward restoring our forests, enhancing biodiversity, and building a sustainable future for all Legazpeños.

🌿𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟮 | 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🌿
The Philippines is home to approximately 7.22 million hectares of forest cover, representing about 24% of the country’s land area. Within these forests are vital rainforest ecosystems that provide habitat for countless species, regulate climate, protect watersheds, and support the livelihoods of many communities. Through the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS), around 4.67 million hectares are terrestrial protected areas, including rainforests and forest reserves. Despite the legislations in place to protect them, these areas continue to face serious threats from illegal logging, land-use conversion, agricultural expansion, mining, infrastructure development, forest fires, wildlife exploitation, and other unsustainable practices that degrade and fragment our remaining forests.

This year’s theme, “𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂,” reminds us that the protection of rainforests begins with the values and actions we nurture within ourselves. We must protect what we have today so that future generations may continue to benefit from the life, beauty, and essential services that our rainforests provide.

🌍 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲
This year's theme, "𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀: 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲.", reminds us that healthy rangelands are essential for food security, biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, rangelands is composed of grasslands and brushlands, and cover 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝟱.𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀, or about 𝟭𝟴.𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆'𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮. These expansive landscapes are found across provinces such as Bukidnon, Cotabato, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Ilocos, Negros, Masbate, Samar, Tarlac, Palawan, and Mindoro, where they support livestock production, protect watersheds, and provide habitat for native wildlife.

Despite their importance, many of 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 due to unsustainable land use, invasive species, and changing climate conditions. Protecting and restoring rangelands through sustainable management can help secure ecosystem services, strengthen rural livelihoods, and enhance the country's resilience to drought and land degradation.

This Desertification and Drought Day 2026, let us recognize the value of our rangelands, respect the communities that have long cared for these landscapes, and restore them for future generations.

In celebration of World Environment Day (June 5, 2026) and World Ocean Day (June 8, 2026), the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) spearheaded a simultaneous clean-up activity along the city’s roadside and coastal areas, reinforcing the importance of protecting both land and marine environments.

Cleanup efforts were conducted at Sawangan Area, Legazpi Marker, and along the Mega Highway going to Camella, where OCENR personnel actively collected waste, promoted proper solid waste segregation, and reminded the public of their shared responsibility in keeping the surroundings clean.

The initiative was further strengthened through the participation of Integrated Coastal Resource Management (ICRM) personnel, headed by Mr. Ryan Roy Acuña, reflecting strong collaboration and a unified commitment to coastal protection, environmental sustainability, and community awareness.

All 70 barangays were also mobilized to conduct the activity simultaneously within their areas of jurisdiction – either estero, river, coastal or any identified area within their barangay that needs cleanup.

This activity calls for strengthened environmental discipline and collective action against pollution and improper waste disposal. It reflects a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, reminding everyone that keeping our roads clean and coastal waters protected is essential in building a healthier and more sustainable community.

As we continue to celebrate these important environmental milestones, may we be reminded that a cleaner environment starts with consistent action, shared responsibility, and a strong commitment to caring for our planet.
