LGU-Camalig trains pinangat vendors on food safety and better selling practices

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Camalig, through the Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office (LEDIPO) in partnership with the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO), launched a specialized training seminar on Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for local pinangat street vendors on Wednesday, July 1, at the 2nd floor of MYTALIC Bldg., Camalig Municipal Hall.

Under the banner "Promoting Safe and Quality Pinangat," the initiative equips mobile and neighborhood vendors from various barangays with standard hygiene protocols designed to boost customer trust, eliminate food-borne risks, and unlock higher income opportunities. The drive directly supports the town's campaign to protect and professionalize its signature One Town, One Product (OTOP) economy.

To bridge the gap between traditional preparation and modern safety standards, the LGU partnered with the Bicol University - Bicol Regional Food Innovation Center (BU-BRFIC). Academic experts led a series of engaging, comprehensive lectures, interactive workshops, and pre- and post-tests to upgrade the vendors' operational methods. Asst. Prof. Ava Nicole B. Azotea trained participants on the 5S methodology (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) to optimize clean workspace management, while Prof. Ma. Janesa A. Reyes detailed Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) specifically tailored to the risk-free handling of local ingredients like gabi (taro) leaves and coconut milk.

Mayor Carlos “Caloy” Irwin G. Baldo Jr. and local councilors personally attended the event to rally behind the vendors, emphasizing their role as keepers of Camalig's premier culinary legacy. During his address, Mayor Baldo extended his gratitude to Bicol University for expanding the community's technical knowledge and lifting the overall quality of the native delicacy. He emphasized that maintaining strict safety standards ensures pinangat remains true to its celebrated local identity: "Masiram, manatuk, maarang" (Delicious, rich/creamy, and spicy).

Reaffirming the local government's economic commitment to grassroots traders, the Mayor conducted an open dialogue to assess the vendors' immediate resource gaps and material shortages. To directly address these needs, the LGU announced that the participants will receive essential vending assistance packages, including stainless steel tables, stockpots, and insulated coolers to ensure sanitary and efficient operations when selling their products. "Kung uno ang p’wede namun itabang saynyo, magsabi sana kamo. Para mas mapakaray ang negosyo niyo, para makaangat-angat kamo," Mayor Baldo assured.

LEDIPO head concluded the training by extending her deep appreciation to both the resource speakers and the participants. She encouraged the vendors to consistently apply the gathered information and technical knowledge moving forward, solidifying a joint community effort to ensure Camalig's top delicacy remains both highly competitive and safe for public consumption.
