PRO-6 invests in cops’ financial, mental well-being to strengthen public service
Recognizing that financial stress and emotional strain can affect job performance, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) is strengthening programs aimed at improving the financial stability and mental well-being of its personnel as part of broader efforts to enhance public service.
Acting Regional Director Police Brig. Gen. Randulf T. Tuaño said a police officer’s personal welfare is closely linked to discipline, focus, integrity, and effectiveness on the job.
Speaking during the RMN Sunday Special program, Tuaño said excessive debt can become a serious distraction for police personnel and may affect their ability to perform their duties.
“Ang concentration ng pagtatrabaho ng isang pulis kung ikaw ay lubog sa utang, hindi ka na makapag-concentrate sa trabaho at yung temptation na mag-moonlighting ka ay napakalakas,” he said.
To address this, PRO-6 has expanded its financial literacy initiatives to help personnel better manage their finances, avoid excessive debt, and strengthen personal accountability.
According to Tuaño, financial stability is not merely a personal concern but an organizational one, as officers who are financially secure are generally better positioned to remain focused, disciplined, and effective in serving the public.
Alongside its financial wellness efforts, PRO-6 has also intensified mental health and wellness programs for its personnel.
These include stress debriefing activities, early identification of stress indicators, and closer monitoring of personnel welfare and morale by commanders. The regional police office said proactive interventions are particularly important for officers assigned to demanding field operations, where operational pressures and emotional fatigue can accumulate over time.
PRO-6 also emphasized the role of leadership in ensuring that police personnel receive timely guidance, support, and assistance when needed.
For Tuaño, caring for police officers ultimately benefits the communities they serve.
“Sa PRO-6, naniniwala tayo na ang malasakit sa kapakanan ng ating mga personnel ay hindi hiwalay sa epektibong serbisyo publiko. Ang isang pulis na may maayos na pag-iisip at matatag na kalagayan sa buhay ay mas nakakapagserbisyo nang tama, tapat, at may integridad,” he said.
The initiatives form part of the Philippine National Police’s Focus Agenda on Morale and Welfare under PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. and support PRO-6’s goal of promoting responsive, trusted, and transformative policing in Western Visayas.
The programs reflect a growing recognition within law enforcement that officers facing financial difficulties, stress, or burnout need support not only for their own well-being, but also to help ensure professional, ethical, and effective service to the public. | Mia Magdalena Fokno / Mountain Beacon
