📢 DA ADVISORY FOR EL NIÑO ALERT

Based on the latest projections of the DOST-PAGASA, there is a 79% probability that El Niño is likely to emerge by June-August 2026 and is likely to persist until early 2027. This led to the issuance of an El Niño Alert.

El Niño can result in above normal temperatures and lesser rainfall. Consequently, it increases the risk of droughts and dry spells in many areas due to drier conditions. Conversely, it may bring above-normal rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) season.

This phenomenon is expected to bring several adverse effects in the agri-fishery sector such as reduced production leading to income losses for farmers and fisherfolk. In addition, this may even result to increase in prices of basic goods that can result to food shortages and disruption of the food supply chain.

The Department of Agriculture has been undertaking interventions across different thematic areas as preparedness measures for El Niño such as prepositioning of agricultural and fishery inputs, assessment of the field situation, conduct of information campaigns, among others. Moreover, the Department coordinates with concerned offices and agencies for monitoring of effects and possible interventions.

ADVISORIES FOR FARMERS AND FISHERFOLK

Farmers and fisherfolk are encouraged to practice the following measures for each commodity to minimize agricultural damage and losses, as applicable.

Crops
- Adjust the cropping calendar
- Apply water-saving methods (rainwater harvesting, AWD, LDIS)
- Use drought-tolerant and early-maturing seeds
- Plant short-gestation crops (mung bean, peanut, soybean)
- Practice crop rotation and use organic fertilizers
- Secure crop insurance from PCIC

Livestock
- Conduct vaccination and veterinary consultations
- Provide proper housing and transport
- Ensure clean water and shaded areas
- Plant drought-resistant forage
- Secure livestock insurance from PCIC

Fisheries
- Monitor water quality and fish stock
- Ensure proper feed and water management
- Provide shade in exposed areas
- Use aerators and spray pipes
- Inspect ponds and protect dikes from leaks and burrowing animals
