Celebrating the legacy of Hermano P**e, a true Filipino hero.💚
The Story of Hermano P**e
Apolinario de la Cruz, known as Hermano P**e, was born in 1815 in Lucban, Tayabas (now Quezon Province). From a young age, he was deeply religious and dreamed of becoming a priest. However, during the Spanish colonial period, Filipino natives (called indios) were not allowed to join religious orders dominated by Spaniards.
Rejected and heartbroken, Hermano P**e decided to form a new religious brotherhood — the CofradÃa de San José (Confraternity of St. Joseph) — in 1832. It was a group for Filipino Catholics who wanted to worship freely and equally before God, without discrimination. The group grew rapidly across Southern Tagalog provinces, gaining thousands of followers.
The Spanish authorities, however, viewed the CofradÃa as a threat. They accused Hermano P**e of rebellion and heresy. In 1841, Spanish soldiers attacked his group in Tayabas. Despite their faith and bravery, the CofradÃa was defeated in a bloody battle at Alitao.
Hermano P**e was captured and executed on November 4, 1841, at the age of 26. Before his death, he declared that he fought not for power but for the right to worship God as a Filipino.
Though he died young, Hermano P**e is remembered as a religious reformer and early Filipino freedom fighter. His courage inspired later generations in the struggle for equality and independence.
