Award-Winning Walis Tambo Producers in Real, Quezon Receive New DOST Funding for Digitalization Project

The Maragondon Dragon Grass Sustainable Livelihood Program Association (MDGSLPA) has secured a new grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) CALABARZON under its Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program to implement a one-year digitalization project. The funding was awarded in recognition of the association's outstanding performance as the 2024 Provincial and Regional Best Community-Based Project Implementer.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the project was signed on June 10, 2026, at DOST-Quezon Office by MDGSLPA officers Ms. Rowena D. Evangelista, Ms. Jocelyn Capablanca, and Ms. Aiya Prero, together with Provincial S&T Director Maria Esperanza E. Jawili.
The project will enhance the association's operations by acquiring desktop computers, a laptop, a printer, additional grass cutters, and a 24/7 camera surveillance system. These interventions are expected to digitalize records management, improve communication and information dissemination, reduce operational costs, strengthen equipment security, and increase overall organizational efficiency.

Following the signing ceremony, a pre-implementation meeting was facilitated by Project Technical Assistant I Ms. Unice Faith N. Cataquiz to discuss project guidelines and clarify the responsibilities of both DOST and the association for the successful implementation of the project.

MDGSLPA has been a DOST-assisted community since 2022. Previous DOST interventions provided the association with a dryer, a grass cutter, and a pollen remover that improved the productivity and quality of its walis tambo production. The successful implementation of these initiatives earned the group provincial and regional recognition, leading to the approval of the new digitalization project.

Held virtually via Zoom on June 4, 2026, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Quezon successfully conducted the 5th session of the 2026 DOST Quezon Beyond Food Labels Series, entitled “Food Safety and Security Through Ionizing Radiation Technology: The Science Behind the Radura Symbol”.

The activity was conducted to increase participants’ awareness of food irradiation technology and the meaning behind the Radura symbol found on food labels. It aimed to help participants understand how ionizing radiation is used to improve food safety, extend shelf life, and reduce harmful microorganisms. It gathered participants from MSMEs, academic institutions, government agencies, private organizations, and individual stakeholders.

The program opened with a message from Ms. Maria Esperanza E. Jawili, Provincial S&T Director, who emphasized that proper understanding of food labels is essential to prevent consumers from being misled by marketing claims and to ensure that purchasing decisions are guided by accurate nutritional information.

The technical discussion was led by Ms. Haydee M. Solomon, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute. The presentation discussed the global food security situation, basic concepts of ionizing radiation, applications of radiation processing, and the appropriate dose levels for specific purposes, including disinfestation, microbial reduction, shelf-life extension, and sterilization. It also clarified the distinction between irradiated food and radioactive food, emphasizing that irradiated food is processed under controlled and regulated conditions, while radioactive food refers to food contaminated with radioactive materials.

Ms. Solomon also presented the regulatory and institutional framework for food irradiation, including labeling and declaration requirements for irradiated food products and products containing irradiated ingredients. She explained that the Radura symbol indicates that a food product has undergone irradiation. Available DOST-PNRI facilities and services, including gamma irradiation and electron beam facilities for research, testing, and possible commercial use, were also discussed.

The session further highlighted global and local applications of food irradiation technology. China was cited as one of the leading users of the technology, while application in the Philippines remains limited, mainly involving spices and herbs. The resource speaker also emphasized that public communication should focus on the benefits of food irradiation, such as improved food safety, longer shelf life, and reduced use of chemical treatments.
