Taas kamaong pugay nating ginugunita ngayong Oktubre ang Buwan ng mga Pesante, kung saan kinikilala natin ang mga magsasaka bilang pangunahing pwersa ng lipunan na bumubuo sa 75% ng ating populasyon sa bansa. Atin silang sinasamahan sa panawagang maibalik ang pinagkakait na lupang kanilang binubungkal habang patuloy silang binabaon ng estado sa matinding kahirapan.

Unang idineklara ang Araw ng mga Pesante ni Ferdinand Marcos Sr. noong 1973 bilang selebrasyon ng Presidential Decree No. 27 na nangakong magbabalik sa mga magsasaka ng kanilang lupain, ngunit lalo lamang nagbaon sa kanila sa utang. Kalaunang nireklama ng Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) ang Oktubre bilang buwan ng pagpapatampok sa pakikibaka para sa tunay na reporma sa lupa noong dekada ‘80.

Patuloy ang paglaban ng mga pesante sa ilalim ng administrasyon ni Marcos Jr. at mga regresibong polisiya tulad ng Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), na matapos ang mahigit tatlong dekada ay nag-iiwan pa rin ng 7 sa bawat 10 magsasaka na walang sariling lupa. Nananatili ang Agribusiness Venture Arrangements (AVAs) at land-use conversion na nagtutulak sa mga kasunduang nagpapahintulot sa panginoong maylupa na kontrolin ang mga sakahan. Dagdag pa rito ang pasismo sa kanayunan sa pamamagitan ng AFP-PNP, na nagdudulot ng iligal na pag-aresto at pagpatay—332 kaso mula 2016 hanggang 2021 sa ilalim ng rehimen ni Rodrigo Duterte. Nagpapatuloy ito ngayon sa mga kaso ng pesanteng organisador, gaya ng pagbaril kay Warlita Jimenez noong Disyembre 2025 at pag-intimida kay Danilo “Ka Daning” Ramos ng anim na unidentified persons nitong Setyembre lamang.

Lalong nasa masalimuot na lagay ng mga pesante sa ilalim ng pasistang estado dahil sa pagpirma ni Marcos Jr. sa kasunduang Pax Silica, isang proyektong nakatuon sa interes ng Estados Unidos. Upang maguna ang US kaysa sa Tsina sa produksyon ng semiconductors sa katunayan, 1,620 na ektaryang lupang sakahan sa New Clark City, Tarlac, Capas ang masasakop ng pagpapatayo ng AI-native industrial acceleration hub. Ipinangakong magbibigay ito ng 200,000 na trabaho at milyun-milyong foreign investments, ngunit nasa 15,200 na magsasaka ang mapapalayas. Nitong Hulyo lamang, 92 na magsasaka na ang pinalayas ng Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA).

Ayon kay Jose Maria “Ka Joma” Sison, isang aktibista at manunulat na nanguna sa armadong pakikibaka noong panahon ni Marcos Sr., nasa ilalim ng malakolonyal at malapyudal na sistema ang Pilipinas. Ang bansa ay malakolonyal sapagkat sunud-sunuran ang estado sa mga kasunduang ipinapataw ng US, gaya ng Pax Silica na sumisira sa ating kabuhayan at lupa, at ginagamit ang AFP-PNP upang mapalakas ang dominasyong ito. Malapyudal naman ang lipunan dahil kontrolado pa rin ng mga panginoong maylupa ang mga sakahan, at patuloy na kinukumberta ang mga lupain upang pigilan ang tunay na pag-unlad ng agraryo, dahilan upang manatili ang bansa bilang reserba ng murang lakas-paggawa.

Sa gitna ng pang-aabuso ng rehimeng US-Marcos-Duterte, buong pwersang nakikiisa ang UPLB Sociology Society sa pagpapatambol ng mga sumusunod na panawagan:
𝐈𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐩𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐥𝐮𝐩𝐚 sa pamamagitan ng libreng pamamahagi ng lupa sa mga magsasaka, pagbuwag sa mga mapang-aping lease agreements, at pagwawakas sa land-use conversion.
𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐅𝐏-𝐏𝐍𝐏 𝐬𝐚 𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐲𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐧 na siyang pangunahing instrumento ng estado sa pasismo na nagdudulot ng sistematikong pang-aabuso, red-tagging, pang-aaresto, at pagpatay laban sa mga magbubukid.
𝐈𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐤𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐱 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚 na mapanirang magnanakaw ng libu-libong ektarya ng lupa mula sa mga pesante.

Sa araw na ito, 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗣𝗟𝗕 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘆 𝗸𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗴𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗸𝗮-𝟱𝟰 𝗸𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗸𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘀. Sa gitna ng masalimuot at madilim na panahon ng represyon at panunupil ay ating kinikilala ang mga nag-alay ng kanilang serbisyo, nakibaka at nakisama sa kolektibong pagkilos para sa hustisya, kabilang na ang mga naging biktima ng marahas at karumal-dumal na paglabag sa karapatang pantao.

Nang idineklara ang Batas Militar, bastusang ginawang basehan ng pasistang rehimeng Marcos ang mga kontra-administrasyon at nakikibaka bilang ugat sa mga kaguluhan ng Pilipinas noon. Gayunpaman, ang mga kilusang ito ay bunga lamang ng mga umiiral na suliraning panlipunan katulad ng laganap na korapsyon, lumolobong utang ng bansa, pagpapakatuta sa Estados Unidos, at panunupil sa mga kritiko. Ang tunay na rason, sa tulong ng kanyang mga kroni at ng imperyalistang Estados Unidos, idineklara ni Marcos Sr. ang Batas Militar upang magkaroon ng monopolyo sa kapangyarihan at pagsilbihan ang kanilang mga interes.

Hanggang sa ngayon, kapansin-pansin pa rin ang impluwensya ng propaganda noong panahon ng Batas Militar sa pagkakaunawa ng mga Pilipino sa ating mga tradisyong kilusan at militanteng pakikibaka. Mahihinuha na para sa ilan, ang aktibismo at pag-oorganisa ay patuloy na itinuturing bilang banta sa kaayusan at seguridad—isang pananaw na pinatitibay ng patuloy na paglaganap ng red-tagging. Subalit ito ay isang sablay na pagkakaintindi sa ating naniningil lamang ng hustisya.

Sa disiplina ng sosyolohiya, maipapaliwanag ang kolektibong pagkilos o collective action ayon sa sosyologo na si Clark McPhail. Iginiit niya na ang mga kolektibong kilusan, lalo na ang mga indibidwal na bumubuo nito, ay hindi dapat ituring na marahas at nakapeperwisyo. Hindi rin sila nawawalan ng katwiran, nadadala lamang ng emosyon at sunod-sunuran sa kanilang grupo. Sa halip, ang kanilang pagkikilahok sa kilusan ay may saysay. Ito ay bunga ng interaksyon, ugnayan sa isa't isa, sariling paniniwala at pagpapahalaga, at pagpapakahulugan sa kanilang paligid.

Nanghina man ang apoy ng mga kilusan noon dahil sa Batas Militar, hindi kailanman ito napawi. Makikita ito sa kasaysayan ng ating Unibersidad, kung saan sa harap ng sapilitang pagkawala, pagsupil ng malayang talakayang panlipunan at pampolitika, at iba pang pananakot at paglabag sa karapatang pantao na ginawa ng mga kapulisan at militar noon ay patuloy nanaig ang militanteng pakikibaka at naglitawan ang mga perspektibong kritikal sa diktadurya. Ito’y nagpapaalala na 𝗸𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴-𝗮𝗮𝗽𝗶 𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗼 𝗮𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗸𝗮.

Ngunit, hindi lubusan nito napatalsik ang pamilyang Marcos dahil mapupuna pa rin ang mga isyu ng korapsyon, paglaki ng utang ng bansa, at pagpakatuta sa Estados Unidos sa administrasyon ng kanyang anak. Sapagkat, kamakailan lang ay isiniwalat ni Marcos Jr. ukol sa ₱19.39 trillion na utang ng bansa bilang “...just a number in the air…” o kaya naman ang pagtanggal ng graft convictions kay Imelda Marcos. Dagdag pa rito ang isyu ng Pax Silica, na maaaring tingnan bilang panibagong anyo ng neokolonyal na ugnayan sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at Estados Unidos, kung saan hindi makatarungang ginamitan ng puwersa at ikinulong ang mga nag kilos-protesta dito noong ika-11 ng Setyembre. Makikita na patuloy ang estado sa marahas na pagpapatahimik nito sa mga mamamayang mulat at nakikibaka sa pamamagitan ng mga batas katulad ng National Action Plan for Unity, Peace, and Development (NAP-UPD) na nag-aanyong “para sa kaayusan ng bansa”.

Kaya naman inaanyayahan ng UPLB Sociology Society ang sangkaestudyantehan at iba pang mga kawani nito na ipagpatuloy ang paninindigan laban sa panunupil at represyon. Sa harap ng pag-iral ng mga isyung umusbong at nagpapatuloy mula sa panahon ng diktadura, ating kilalanin ang mayamang tradisyon ng pakikibaka na lumitaw sa gitna ng panunupil.
