PCSO CHARITY RUN TO BE HELD ON OCTOBER 18

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) will hold its third annual Charity Run on October 18 at Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati City, organized by RunRio.

With this, the PCSO is calling on Filipinos who want to physically participate in the agency's mission to join an event that General Manager Melquiades "Mel" Robles describes as the most visible manifestation of solidarity with PCSO's work.

Robles extended the invitation in an interview on DZRH News program "The Situation Report" on Monday, October 5, saying the event shows what PCSO's charity mandate means beyond the games and the Guarantee Letters.

The PCSO general manager said the Charity Run is designed for Filipinos who want to express their support for the spirit of giving in a concrete and communal way: running alongside others who share the belief that government and citizens must work together to help those who cannot help themselves.

"Para sa ating mga kababayan na nais makiisa sa gawain po ng PCSO at sa diwa ng pagkakawanggawa, ito po ang pinakamakikita o physical manifestation ng inyong pakikiisa," Robles said.

"Nawa ay kayo rin po ay mahawa ng aming sakit ng pagkakawanggawa. Maraming salamat po!" he said.

SMALL TOWN LOTTERY: PCSO'S FRONTLINERS, FIRST RESPONDERS

The people who collect lotto bets from sari-sari stores, market stalls, and street corners across the Philippines serve a second function that most Filipinos never think about.

When disaster strikes, they are often the first to know what has happened and the first to move, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) General Manager Melquiades "Mel" Robles said Monday, October 5.

Robles explained the role of PCSO's Small Town Lottery (STL) agents in disaster response in an interview on DZRH News program "The Situation Report" on Monday, October 5, describing a nationwide network of people who know their communities in a way that no national government agency can replicate.

The PCSO general manager said STL agents are pre-positioned with basic supplies, can mobilize in two hours, know which bridges have collapsed, and know the actual situation on the ground before the information reaches Manila.

"Alam nila kung saan 'yung bumagsak na tulay, alam nila paano maparating 'yung tulong. They're very familiar; they have their people everywhere. Basta mananaya ng Small Town Lottery, they have their people there. Alam nila 'yung actual situation even before malaman ng national," Robles said.

He said the agents function as PCSO's feedback network as well, not just delivering relief but reporting back on which areas need help most urgently.

Robles said this allows PCSO to allocate its resources more precisely than a top-down national assessment would allow.

"'Pag nakita namin, in two hours nakakagalaw sila. Saka kilala nila 'yung network ng mga barangay pati mga organisasyon doon," he said.

PCSO CHIEF PROMOTED TO REAR ADMIRAL IN PH COAST GUARD AUXILIARY

Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) General Manager Melquiades "Mel" Robles has been promoted to Rear Admiral in the Auxiliary Service of the Philippine Coast Guard.

This reflects the partnership between the PCSO and the Coast Guard that Robles says has deepened through years of joint disaster response.

Robles made the statement in an interview on DZRH News program "The Situation Report" on Monday, October 5, explaining that the Coast Guard is PCSO's most natural partner in disaster operations because of its unmatched capacity for moving large volumes of relief goods across the archipelago.

The PCSO general manager said the Philippines' island geography makes double-handling of relief goods unavoidable, but the Coast Guard's assets make that process as efficient as it can be.

"When we talk about volume, ang Coast Guard talaga ang malaking tulong sa amin. Lalo na ngayon, ang Coast Guard, alam naman natin in times of peacetime, civilian 'yan," Robles said.

"So right now, in our civilian capacity, ka-partner namin sila sa mga relief and rescue efforts din nila, we are supporting them," the PCSO general manager said.

Robles described the relationship between PCSO and the Coast Guard as one that has evolved organically through shared experience in disaster response, to the point where, he joked, they were already practically living together before the formal promotion.

"Natural partners kami pagdating ng disaster. Sila man, marami naitutulong sa amin, at kami rin ay may naitutulong din naman sa kanila kapag kailangan nila ng tulong. In other words, mutually, magka-live-in na kami bago kami magpakasal," he said.
