On June 12, 1898, Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, a Filipino lawyer, reformist, and nationalist, wrote and read the Act of Declaration of Philippine Independence in Spanish during the historic proclamation in Kawit, Cavite. Contrary to popular belief, it was heโ€”not Aguinaldoโ€”who waved the Philippine flag, and it was done from a window, not the balcony. Bautista also served as Solicitor General of the revolutionary government. As the Philippines celebrates its 127th Independence Day today, June 12, 2025, his contributions remain vital in honoring the nationโ€™s fight for freedom.
