Second Chance Philippines proudly congratulates JCINSP Edo Lobenia, our Founder and Executive Director, for being accepted into the prestigious Australia Awards Scholarship Program—Cohort 2026 intake.

He will pursue a Master in Public Policy at the University of Sydney, where his research and studies will focus on developing public policy that is technically sound, implementable within institutions, and aligned with political realities, while benchmarking global best practices to contribute to the development of the Philippines meaningfully.

The Australia Awards is the Australian Government’s flagship scholarship program, investing in future leaders from partner countries who are committed to public service, good governance, and long-term national development.

Merry Christmas from Second Chance Philippines, and thank you for walking with us this year!

To our stakeholders who kept us focused on what matters, to our partners who opened doors that used to be closed, to our LGUs who helped turn plans into action on the ground, to our interns who showed up with energy and ideas, and to our impact investors who chose to back outcomes and dignity, your trust carried this mission forward.

Because of you, second chances did not stay as a message on a poster; they became real work, real training, and real hope for families trying to rebuild. As we step into a new year, I hope you’ll keep asking the same question we ask every day: what else can we do together to make sure no one gets left behind?

FEATURES: For many Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs), the real challenge begins once they leave jail. Starting over is difficult, and uncertainty often overshadows their hope for a new life. But in Romblon, one act of compassion has given a former PDL a stronger chance to rebuild.

Stefan Jasieński was a Polish resistance officer in the Armia Krajowa who was arrested in 1944 and imprisoned in Auschwitz-Birkenau. He was held in the notorious Block 11, Cell 21, where the date and circumstances of his death in early January 1945 remain uncertain. Despite the brutal conditions, he continued to express his identity and hope through acts of creativity and faith.

Inside his cell, Jasieński carved religious and patriotic symbols into the walls with only his nails, including the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a crucifix, and emblems associated with his military service. These carvings remain today. They serve as a powerful testament to resilience, faith, and human dignity in the face of dehumanization and terror.

On 26 November 2025, BJMP XI leaders visited Davao City Jail Male Dormitory for a rapid area assessment focused on dignity and rehabilitation.

Regional Director JCSUPT Rufino M. Santiago Jr. and Jail Warden JSUPT Kaye G. Del Rosario led open conversations with PDL, listening to their needs and strengths. At the same time, JCINSP Elmero L. Matondo ensured that their voices guided the discussion. Lawig-Diwa Inc., led by artist Rey “Kublai” Millan, showed how art can heal, restore identity, and remind people that no one is beyond redemption. Second Chance Philippines, founded by JCINSP Edo B. Lobenia, joined the effort to strengthen partnerships and co-create solutions to the social challenges that lead to incarceration. Rehabilitation became a shared commitment to see every person, to hear their story, and to give them a genuine chance to start again. 🇵🇭💯🎨🖌️✏️
