The Department of Trade and Industry - Southern Leyte Provincial Office successfully conducted the Franchising 101 seminar held on June 4, 2026 at the Plenary Hall, SLSU Main Campus, bringing together MSMEs and aspiring entrepreneurs eager to learn more about franchising opportunities.

In partnership with the Philippine Franchise Association, participants gained valuable insights on the Overview of Franchising in the Philippines, Advantages and Benefits of Franchising, Franchise Opportunities, Challenges in Franchising, Signs of Franchise Scams, and the Importance of Doing Due Diligence before investing in a franchise.

🎤 Special thanks to our resource speaker, Ceasar B. Laro Jr. of the Philippine Franchise Association, for sharing his expertise and practical guidance that empowered participants to make informed business decisions and explore franchising as a viable path to entrepreneurship and business growth.

💡 A highlight of the event was the one-on-one coaching session, where participants had the opportunity to consult directly with the resource speaker, ask specific questions, and receive personalized advice on franchise opportunities and business expansion strategies.

𝗗𝗧𝗜 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝘆𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴

From May 25–29, 2026, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Southern Leyte Provincial Office successfully conducted a Skills Training on Abaca Handicraft Making for the members of the Hinunangan Abaca Farmers Cooperative in Catublian, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.

The five-day training aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills in weaving sinamay and producing handicraft items using abaca ombak, promoting value addition to locally produced abaca and creating opportunities for increased income among cooperative members.

The activity was conducted in coordination with the Office of the Municipal Agriculture Services (OMAS) of LGU-Hinunangan, the Hinunangan Tourism Office, and the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA). The training was further strengthened through the active support of Mayor Engr. Ymard Joseph Tocmo, whose commitment to agricultural and livelihood development continues to create opportunities for local farmers and community organizations.

Through collaborative efforts among national government agencies, local government units, and development partners, the training provided participants with practical skills that can help transform raw abaca fibers into marketable handicraft products, contributing to sustainable livelihood and rural enterprise development.

DTI remains committed to empowering local communities by promoting innovation, enhancing entrepreneurial capabilities, and maximizing the value of Southern Leyte’s rich abaca resources.

5. Computer literate (knowledgeable on basic Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)
6. Preferably with relevant experience

Re-Echo Session on Empowerment through Data-Driven Green Entrepreneurship (EDGE) for Youth Champions in Southern Leyte

The Department of Trade and Industry through the RAPID Growth Project successfully conducted the three runs of the Re-Echo Session on Empowerment through Data-Driven Green Entrepreneurship (EDGE) for Youth Champions in Southern Leyte on May 19, 2026 at Barangay Marayag, San Francisco; May 20, 2026 at SLSU Hinunangan; and May 21, 2026 at SLSU Bontoc, with a total of 135 youth participants trained. The activity served as a strategic platform to cascade the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained by trained Youth Champions to fellow coconut-engaged youth in their respective communities, strengthening youth participation in the coconut value chain and supporting the goals of the UPGRADE Youth initiative.

The activity strengthened youth participation in the coconut value chain by equipping participants with practical knowledge on agripreneurship, value chain development, artificial intelligence (AI), and geotagging. Participants explored AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Dola in creating business ideas, slogans, logos, and marketing strategies through interactive workshop activities.

Participants were also introduced to Google Business Profile to learn the importance of digital business presence, geotagging, and online promotion in improving business visibility and customer reach. The activity further encouraged collaboration, peer learning, and youth engagement in entrepreneurship and enterprise development in Southern Leyte.

🌿♻️ DTI-Southern Leyte Conducts Skills Training on Biodiesel Making for MSMEs ♻️🌿

The Department of Trade and Industry – Southern Leyte Provincial Office, through its Negosyo Centers, in partnership with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Southern Leyte Inc., successfully conducted the Skills Training on Biodiesel Making to Reduce MSME Operating Costs on 20 May 2026. A total of 29 participants attended the said activity.

The activity was developed in response to global developments affecting fuel prices and energy supply, aiming to promote practical and sustainable solutions that help MSMEs reduce operational costs and strengthen resilience. Participants were equipped with hands-on knowledge in producing biodiesel from used cooking oil, including proper safety practices, production procedures, and settling time for quality output. A live demonstration and burning test comparing biodiesel and conventional diesel further enhanced their understanding of its efficiency as a cost-saving and environment-friendly fuel option.

Resource speaker Dr. Rico O. Cruz shared technical insights on biodiesel production and its benefits in promoting cost reduction and environmental sustainability. Participants actively engaged in the activity, showing strong interest in adopting sustainable energy solutions for their enterprises.

💡 Through initiatives like this, DTI-Southern Leyte continues to empower MSMEs through innovation, sustainability, and capacity-building programs.

HIGHLIGHTS | Second Run of the Re-Echo Session on Empowerment through Data-Driven Green Entrepreneurship (EDGE) for Youth Champions in Southern Leyte

Another run of the Re-Echo Session on Empowerment through Data-Driven Green Entrepreneurship (EDGE) for Youth Champions in Southern Leyte was conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry through the RAPID Growth Project on May 20, 2026, with 40 youth participants from the Agribusiness Department of Southern Leyte State University, composed of 1st year, 2nd year, and 3rd year students.

Through the Re-Echo Session, youth participants were equipped with practical tools and approaches to deliver engaging and real-world learning sessions on sustainable entrepreneurship. The activity integrated foundational concepts in Value Chain Development with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and geotagging, enabling participants to identify opportunities, enhance business ideas, and apply technology-driven solutions to real-life community and enterprise challenges.
