PCG Maasin Rescues 12 Boat Race Participants in Distress Near Mahayahay Seas; Survivors Given Shelter and Dinner by City DRRMO
MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte — Twelve passengers aboard a boat in distress were safely rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Maasin Station at around 10:00 p.m. on July 22, 2026, near the waters off Barangay Mahayahay, Maasin City, Southern Leyte.
The rescued passengers, who came from Dinagat Islands, were traveling from Albuera, Leyte after participating in a boat race competition when their vessel encountered difficulty while at sea. A distress situation prompted an immediate response from maritime authorities.
Personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard Maasin Station swiftly conducted a rescue operation and successfully brought all 12 passengers to safety.
After the rescue, the passengers were assisted by the Maasin City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), who provided support and coordinated assistance for the rescued individuals.
Upon arrival at the CDRRMO facility, responders learned that the passengers had not eaten during their ordeal while waiting for rescue. In response, the disaster office prepared and served a hot dinner for all 12 passengers to help restore their strength and provide comfort after the stressful incident.
The rescued boat race participants were given temporary shelter, monitored by responders, and provided necessary assistance while arrangements were being made for their safe return and continued journey.
The successful rescue operation highlighted the strong coordination between the PCG Maasin Station, the Maasin City DRRMO, and other local responders in protecting lives during maritime emergencies.
Authorities continue to remind the public, especially sea travelers and boat race participants, to prioritize maritime safety by ensuring vessels are in good condition, carrying adequate supplies, and having proper emergency equipment before heading out to sea.
