Our Power, Our Planet: Protecting Biodiversity Through Collective Action

Every year, Earth Day reminds us that the future of our planet depends on the choices we make today. With this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œOur Power, Our Planet,โ€ the message is clear: environmental protection is a shared responsibility.

The Mount Arayat Protected Landscape stands as a vital refuge for biodiversity, supporting a range of plant and animal life that depend on balanced ecosystems to thrive. Its forests, slopes, and natural habitats play an essential role in sustaining ecological health within the region.

Conserving this landscape requires collective effortโ€”from protecting natural habitats to promoting responsible stewardship. Individual actions, when combined, contribute to the broader goal of safeguarding biodiversity for future generations.

This call aligns with SDG 15: Life on Land โ€“ Target 15.1: Conserve terrestrial ecosystems, emphasizing the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of ecosystems such as forests and mountains.

Our power lies in our shared commitment. Our planet depends on it.

On 21 March, the International Day of Forests is observed to highlight the vital role of forests in sustaining ecosystems and supporting human well-being.

The 2026 theme, โ€œForests and Economies,โ€ emphasizes how forests contribute to economic prosperity by providing jobs, supporting livelihoods, and sustaining industries such as sustainable agriculture and bioeconomies.

Forests also protect watersheds, regulate water systems, and maintain environmental conditions essential for productivity and long-term development.

Within the Mt. Arayat Protected Landscape, conserving forest ecosystems supports local livelihoods while safeguarding watershed functions that communities depend on. Protecting these forests reinforces the connection between ecological integrity and sustainable economic value.

On 3 March, World Wildlife Day is observed to recognize the vital role of wild species in sustaining ecosystems and human well-being.

The 2026 theme, โ€œMedicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods,โ€ emphasizes the importance of protecting plant biodiversity that supports traditional knowledge, primary healthcare, and local livelihoods.

Medicinal and aromatic plants thrive in healthy forest ecosystems. Their conservation is closely linked to habitat protection and responsible resource management.

Within the Mt. Arayat Protected Landscape, safeguarding forest ecosystems helps conserve native plant species that contribute to the mountainโ€™s ecological integrity. Protecting these landscapes supports biodiversity while reinforcing the value of conserving medicinal and aromatic plants as part of the areaโ€™s natural heritage.

Dr. Gerald M. Salas presented the rationale of the project, emphasizing the importance of structured and participatory approaches in strengthening protected area management.

A presentation on the developed criteria for the Flagship Species Workshop, including the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), was delivered by Mr. Francis Joseph R. Masa and Mr. Christian I. Apilado. This was followed by a presentation of the Sustainable Tourism Scorecard by Mr. Fernan I. Camara. Participants then proceeded to the workshop proper, engaging in discussions, scoring exercises, and validation sessions.

Hon. Mayor Jeffrey Luriz of the Municipality of Arayat delivered the programme message, expressing the municipalityโ€™s full support for the Conserve MAPL Project Team. He stated that establishing a clear and science-based identity for Mt. Arayat has been a long-time vision for the mountain, emphasizing that defining flagship species and strengthening sustainable tourism standards are important steps toward giving Mt. Arayat a distinct environmental identity anchored on conservation. Vice Mayor Ramon Chancoco of Arayat was also present during the workshop.

The programme concluded with the awarding of certificates, closing remarks, and a synthesis and validation session led by Dr. Gerald M. Salas. Forester Allain James Aquino served as emcee.

Arayat, Pampanga โ€” 25 February 2026 โ€” A forest fire broke out on a portion of Mt. Arayat in Brgy. San Juan Baรฑo, Arayat, Pampanga on Wednesday.

Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Arayat, together with barangay officials, immediately responded to contain the blaze. Due to the elevated and hard-to-reach location of the fire, responders are implementing manual firefighting using the swatter method, as fire trucks are unable to access the affected area.

The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) reported that DENR bantay gubat and additional personnel continue conducting manual fire suppression operations outside the boundary of Mt. Arayat.

Authorities said the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Forty years ago, millions of Filipinos gathered along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in a peaceful stand that would redefine the nationโ€™s history. From 22โ€“25 February 1986, ordinary citizens โ€” students, workers, religious communities, and families โ€” stood together in a nonviolent call for democratic change.

The EDSA People Power Revolution marked a turning point that restored democratic institutions and reaffirmed the peopleโ€™s voice in governance. It showed the world that unity and courage, expressed peacefully, can shape the course of a nation.

On its 40th anniversary, we remember not only the historic moment, but the values it carried โ€” unity, dignity, accountability, and hope. May the spirit of peaceful civic action continue to inspire generations to uphold democratic principles and safeguard freedoms for all.
