PSEM and MGB MIMAROPA Conclude MinECon2026 with Tree Planting Activity in Celebration of Philippine Independence Day
Puerto Princesa City, Palawan | 12 June 2026 - The Philippine Society of Mining Engineers (PSEM), in partnership with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) MIMAROPA Region, successfully concluded the Mining Engineers’ Convention (MinECon2026) through a meaningful tree planting activity held at the Palawan Quicksilver Mines, Inc. (PQMI) Rehabilitation Site in Barangay Sta. Lourdes, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, in celebration of the 128th Philippine Independence Day.
The activity served as a fitting culmination of MinECon2026, reinforcing the mining industry’s continuing commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and responsible mineral resource management.
Engr. Felizardo A. Gacad, Jr., newly elected President of the PSEM and Regional Director of MGB MIMAROPA, emphasized that the celebration of independence extends beyond honoring the nation’s history and includes safeguarding the country’s natural resources for future generations.
In his message, Engr. Gacad highlighted that responsible mining and environmental protection go hand in hand, noting that rehabilitation initiatives demonstrate how the mining sector can contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
He further shared that MinECon2026 served as a platform to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders and promote innovations and practices that advance sustainable mining in the Philippines.
Held under the theme, “Engineering the Future: Sustainable Minerals for a Resilient Nation,” MinECon2026 gathered mining professionals, government agencies, and industry partners to discuss emerging opportunities, challenges, and best practices in the sector.
The activity was attended by the MGB Regional Directors of Region VI and the Negros Island Region, Ms. Cecille Ochavo-Saycon and Mr. Benjie L. Espejo, respectively; Engr. Armando L. Malicse, President of the PSEM Visayas Chapter; representatives from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Palawan; and participants from Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation.
The tree planting activity at the PQMI Rehabilitation Site concluded the convention on a meaningful note - affirming the mining sector’s commitment that progress and environmental responsibility can move forward together.
