[Fuda News | World Ablative Therapies Association (WATA 2026)]

Global Ablation Experts Gather as FudaShines at WATA 2026
From May 15 to 17, 2026, the inaugural academic conference of the World Ablative Therapies Association (WATA 2026) was held in Beijing, China.

As WATA’s first global academic event, the conference was themed “United in Ablation Worldwide: Building Consensus, Advancing Evidence, Pursuing Excellence.” Leading experts and scholars from more than 30 countries and regions gathered to discuss clinical topics, technological innovation, and discipline development in tumor ablation, while exploring the latest advancements and future directions of ablation therapy.
On May 15, the pre-conference international training courses officially kicked off, focusing on key topics including lung tumor ablation, thyroid tumor ablation, irreversible electroporation (NanoKnife), and liver tumor ablation. Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital President Niu Lizhi was invited to attend and delivered two keynote presentations: Standardization and Techniques of Cryoablation for Liver Cancer and Clinical Application of NanoKnife for Liver and Pancreatic Tumors Under Combined Ultrasound and CT Guidance.

During the training sessions, President Niu shared extensive clinical experience through numerous classic cases, explaining both the technical essentials and clinical challenges of various ablation procedures in a clear and practical manner. Particularly noteworthy was the internationally pioneered “two-needle technique” for NanoKnife ablation developed by Fuda, which received high praise from attending experts and scholars for its cost-effectiveness, safety, and efficiency.
At the Breast and Gynecologic Ablation Session, Ma Yangyang delivered a special presentation titled Cryoablation for Breast Cancer. He noted that compared with traditional open surgery, cryoablation offers several advantages, including minimal trauma, faster recovery, repeatability, real-time imaging guidance, and better cosmetic preservation of the breast.
For carefully selected patients with early-stage breast cancer, as well as those with recurrent or metastatic disease or patients unable to tolerate surgery, cryoablation can serve as an important complementary approach for local tumor control and multidisciplinary treatment.

Importantly, cryoablation is not only a local treatment modality but may also activate anti-tumor immune responses through mechanisms such as tumor antigen release, immunogenic cell death, and modulation of the tumor microenvironment. As a result, the combination of cryoablation with systemic therapies — including immunotherapy, targeted therapy, endocrine therapy, and chemotherapy — is emerging as a promising direction in comprehensive breast cancer treatment. In his presentation, Director Ma also highlighted the value of cryoablation in local tumor control, symptom relief, synergistic multidisciplinary treatment, and potential immune activation based on recent research findings and clinical experience.

As a global academic organization initiated by Chinese physicians, WATA 2026 brought together leading ablation experts from around the world in Beijing, creating a high-level international platform for academic exchange and collaboration. Experts shared their practical experience and unique insights, and the cross-border exchange of ideas greatly benefited all participants.
Notably, the conference also officially designated May 16 as “World Ablation Day” for the first time, marking a new milestone in the global development of ablation therapy in the fight against cancer.
Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital has long been dedicated to the field of minimally invasive cancer therapy. By actively participating in this international conference and sharing China’s experience in tumor ablation, the hospital once again demonstrated its professional expertise and commitment in the field of ablation therapy.
Taking this conference and the newly established “World Ablation Day” as a new starting point, the hospital will continue to strengthen international collaboration, integrate global expertise, and work together with peers worldwide to promote the future development of minimally invasive ablation therapy toward greater precision, standardization, and innovation.

4A8E4DA4-6E77-444F-AB64-BDA8EA5BF7CA.png

Jiang introduced that over 20 years ago, Fuda took the lead in introducing cryoablation technology and successfully applied it in tumor treatment, achieving internationally advanced levels in both clinical practice and academic research, and earning wide recognition. Meanwhile, the hospital continues to uphold innovation while preserving core principles, actively adopting advanced technologies such as NanoKnife ablation, seed implantation, photodynamic therapy, and vascular interventional treatments to continuously strengthen its medical capabilities.

Fuda has also established partnerships with medical institutions across multiple countries and regions, providing systematic pre-hospital, in-hospital, and post-hospital services. In particular, it emphasizes post-treatment rehabilitation management to ensure patients’ survival outcomes and quality of life.

Jiang expressed her hope that through China–Thailand cooperation, high-quality and accessible treatment services can be provided to cancer patients worldwide. She also hopes that every Thai patient, as well as their families and friends visiting China and Fuda, can have a warm and memorable experience.

Vice President Long Xin’an shared clinical experiences involving several Thai cancer patients. Many of these patients have achieved survival of more than 10 years after systematic anti-tumor treatments. He noted that most Thai patients who come for treatment are already in advanced stages and may not benefit significantly from conventional surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy. However, at Fuda, a multidisciplinary team approach—combining local ablation with systemic therapy—often yields significantly better outcomes than single-modality treatments.

4F468433-8EA3-4D6A-A6A3-6556878488D9.png

At the same time, he candidly acknowledged the limitations of current medical treatments. For some severe cases, recurrence and metastasis remain inevitable. “Even when tumors cannot be completely eliminated, we can still help patients achieve ‘living with cancer,’ prolong survival, and improve quality of life,” he said. He expressed hope to continue leveraging professional expertise and high-quality services to benefit more patients in the future.

Among the visitors, Dr. Tawatchai Chuwansombat, Senior Advisor of World Medical Center Hospital, and Ms. Pitchamon Pattamada, Vice Chairperson of Cosmi Co., Ltd., held particularly special roles. Not only are they experienced professionals in Thailand’s medical field, but they are also “witnesses” of Fuda’s care, having previously been family members of patients treated at the hospital. Their personal experiences gave them a deep appreciation of both Fuda’s medical technology and its humanistic care.

1ACD7927-253E-4C1F-A6DB-43ED5C913669.png

They stated that their visit, along with other Thai experts, was also driven by a sense of social responsibility. From the perspective of improving patients’ survival and quality of life, they hope to further strengthen China–Thailand friendship through exchange and cooperation, and jointly build high-quality medical services that offer better patient experiences.

During the meeting, both sides conducted in-depth discussions on teleconsultation services, integrated pre-, in-, and post-hospital care, and post-treatment follow-up and rehabilitation management. 43C0EEAA-D7C1-483D-8032-2E633FFCCD8A.jpg

At the conclusion of the visit, both sides exchanged gifts as a token of friendship. The Thai delegation presented a sacred Thai totem—the Garuda—symbolizing their wish for Fuda to “soar high and achieve a bright future.” This meaningful gift stands as a testament to the strong and growing friendship between the two countries in the medical field.

Friendship transcends mountains and seas, and cooperation heals the future. This visit by the Thai medical delegation not only deepened mutual understanding and trust but also laid a solid foundation for long-term cooperation in cancer treatment between China and Thailand. In the future, Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital will continue to uphold the principles of openness, sharing, and innovation, working hand in hand with medical institutions in Thailand and around the world to contribute greater wisdom and strength to global health.
