THIS COFFEE FARM IN MOUNTAIN PROVINCE HELPS KEEP FORESTS ALIVE

In the highlands of Barlig, Mountain Province, an Igorot-led coffee farm is proving that sustainable farming and forest conservation can coexist. Founded in 2021 by local farmer and environmental advocate Daniel Maches, Barlig Rainforest Coffee grows coffee under the forest canopy without clearing trees, preserving one of the last old-growth rainforests in the area.

“We started this project in Mountain Province… because we wanted to create a pilot farm that harmonizes this coffee production with rainforest conservation,” Maches said. “We have one of the last remaining old-growth rainforests, and our goal, as a community [is] to be able to preserve this and, at the same time, to create sustainable livelihood, not just advocating for conservation.”

By using minimal clearing and avoiding chemicals, the farm lets the rainforest naturally nurture the coffee plants, while also protecting native species and endangered heirloom crops. Maches hopes this model will inspire other indigenous communities to become stewards of their land and reverse deforestation across the country.
