From medical consultations and free medicines to food packs, haircuts, seedlings, and life-saving lessons, the Canan National High School community received more than immediate assistance on August 14 as the Pangasinan Health and Wellness Club brought its outreach program to the campus.
Learners and personnel availed themselves of free medical consultations, medicines and vitamins through the Pangasinan Provincial Hospitalโs YAKAP Program, while arroz caldo, food packs, and free haircuts were also provided. Seedlings from the Provincial Agriculture Office added an environmental component to the activity, extending the outreach beyond health services alone.
The program also placed emphasis on knowledge that could protect lives beyond the day of the activity. The Provincial Health Office discussed proper hygiene and rainy-season illnesses, particularly dengue and leptospirosis, while participants underwent Basic Life Support (BLS) training to learn how to respond during emergencies.
For Maโam Sonia G. Yao, President of the Health and Wellness Club and LDRRMO IV of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), the outreach reflects the groupโs focus on prevention. According to Yao, โPrevention is better than cure,โ as protecting people before illness occurs is better than responding only after they become sick.
The activity was made possible through the support and cooperation of the Provincial Government of Pangasinan under the leadership of Governor Ramon V. Guico III, together with various provincial offices, hospitals, and partner agencies. The Pangasinan Provincial Hospital provided medical consultations, medicines, and vitamins; the Provincial Health Office facilitated the health lectures; and the Provincial Agriculture Office provided seedlings. PSWDO/PSWD supported the arroz caldo distribution, while the PDRRMO contributed to safety and emergency-related activities. PIO/PEMRO assisted with documentation and other program requirements.
The outreach came through coordination initiated by Maโam Erika Cruz, Administrative Officer of Canan NHS, who reached out to the Health and Wellness Club to request several basic medical equipment for the schoolโs planned mini clinic. The request opened an opportunity for the wellness group to extend its assistance beyond the initial need and bring a wider range of services to the school community.
Sir John Bernardino, School Principal of Canan NHS, welcomed and supported the initiative as the provincial group and its partner offices brought the outreach services to the school.
Messages during the activity were delivered by Sir Louie F. Ocampo of the PGADH Internal Audit Services, Maโam Janette Asis of the HRMDO, Atty. Ronn Dale Castillo, Executive Assistant III, and Maโam Yao.
The value of the outreach extended beyond the services received that day. By bringing health care, nourishment, environmental support, and emergency preparedness together, the initiative gave the Canan NHS community not only assistance for the present, but knowledge and skills to carry into the days ahead.
