DA-RCPC 13 engaged in a two-day benchmarking activity on August 19โ€“20, 2026, in RCPC 10 Bangcud, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon led by Center Chief June Anthony Ouano. The activity provided an avenue for both Centers to share approaches, explore established production systems, and exchange practical insights that can further support their respective biological control initiatives.

As part of the activity, the participants visited the Patag Corona Village-Level Biocon Laboratory in Maramag, Bukidnon, the Central Mindanao University Village-Level Biocon Laboratory, and the LGU Malaybalay Village-Level Biocon Laboratory. The visits showcased diverse approaches to village-level BCA production and created opportunities to exchange experiences on laboratory operations, rearing practices, production techniques, and the management of biological control resources.

The participants also visited the laboratories of DA-RCPC 10, where the Center shared its practices across its BCA production units. These included the Entomopathogen Unit, the Predatory Insect Unit, and the Parasitoid Unit.

The two-day activity underscored the importance of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and continuous learning in advancing sustainable biological control and strengthening the capacity of agricultural institutions to provide effective crop protection support to farmers.

The red-striped soft scale insect (๐˜—๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ข ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ข) is an emerging pest of sugarcane in the Philippines. It was first detected in Pampanga in 2022 and was later confirmed in Negros in 2025. Since then, it has spread to other areas, including Bukidnon in Northern Mindanao.

Damage initially appears on the lower leaves, often starting along the edges of sugarcane fields. As affected leaves dry and fall, the nymphs (crawlers) move to the upper leaves, causing further damage (Guerrero et al., 2024).

Alinsunod ito sa Module 3 o ikalawang linggo ng Training of Trainers on Climate-Resilient on Cacao Production and Post-Harvest Technology na target ang mga cacao farmer leaders at mga Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs).

Highlight ngayong araw ang masusing pagsasanay at pagkilala sa mga insektong maaaring sumira ng cacao plantation kasama ang mga entomologists at pathologistโ€”mga experto sa pananaliksik patungkol sa mga insekto at mga sakit ng mga halaman.

Ang pagsasanay ay isang makabuluhang aksyon ng CAG Office sa partnership ng LGU Iligan at Meiji Chocolate Japan na naglalayong gawing competitive at cacao-producing ang lungsod sa buong Northern Mindanao.

Twenty-five (25) farmer-participants from Basac, Lantapan, Bukidnon, from Farmers Field School on Vegetable Production facilitated by the Provincial Agriculture Officeโ€“Bukidnon, visited the DAโ€“Regional Crop Protection Center X in Bangcud, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, on July 23, 2026, as part of their educational tour to various agricultural research institutions.

During the visit, the participants gained valuable knowledge on integrated pest management, and the biological control agents produced by the Center. The activity enhanced their understanding of sustainable crop protection practices, which they can apply to improve crop productivity and reduce pest-related losses in their respective farming communities.

To strengthen the capability of local government technical personnel in the production of biological control agents (B As), the Department of Agriculture-Regional Crop Protection Center (DA-RCPC) 10 conducted a two-day training on mass production of ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ป๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ and entomopathogenic fungi for the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAgro) of Bukidnon on July 15โ€“16, 2026.

During the training, participants were equipped with equipped with the proper production procedures and strategic approaches to ensure the efficient and quality production of ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ป๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ and entomopathogenic fungi.

The activity aimed to enhance the participantsโ€™ technical competence in producing BCAs that can be utilized in integrated pest and disease management programs, thereby, promoting sustainable and environment-friendly agricultural practices throughout the province.

The training covered the complete production process, including substrate preparation, sterilization, inoculation, incubation, quality control, and the proper handling and storage of BCAs.

๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ป๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ is a beneficial soil-dwelling fungus widely used as a biological control agent (BCA), and plant growth promoter.

Meanwhile, entomopathogenic fungi serve as natural biological control agents that infect and suppress insect pests, providing an effective and environmentally sound alternative to chemical pesticides.

The DA-RCPC 10 continues to support the LGUs in strengthening sustainable crop protection strategies and advancing climate-resilient and eco-friendly agricultural production systems. #
