“Guardians of Potato Diversity”
by: Michael Major

Potato is one of the most consumed crops in the world. In the highlands of Peru, a group of farmers are conserving the diversity and nurturing the traditional knowledge of their staple food: the potato. But they can’t do it alone, a global effort is required.

“There are thousands of landraces of potatoes”, all of these landraces have, over time developed mechanisms to cope with all sort of challenges, including pests and diseases, drought and high temperatures.

Plant breeders can harness the diversity of landraces to breed for improved potato varieties that are more resilient to the challenges of today and the unknown challenges of the future.

One point addresses genotyping the varieties currently held in situ and ex situ. Genotyping is a way of describing the genetic composition of a particular potato plant. That makes it easier for breeders to select samples for their improvement programs, and genebanks to decide what to conserve.

Agriculture and Biology student interns from NEMSU, CMU, MVC and BukSU

The Department of Agriculture- Northern Mindanao Agricultural Crops and Livestock Research Complex is delighted to have welcomed student interns to learn theories, concepts, and ideas in addition to what they have learned from the academe that would help them to be prepared for the their future employment.

40 student interns from different schools in Mindanao had their internship at the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory from February 06-29, 2024. They had the chance to witness and experience firsthand the different operations involved in the production of G0 disease-free planting materials of White Potato.

Their internship is a valuable stepping stone towards building a successful career in the future. This is their chance to learn, grow, and gain practical experiences in their chosen field.

After their assignment at the Plant Tissue Culture Lab. they will be assigned to the other projects in NMACLRC, may they learn as much as they can and bring with them the knowledge and skills they have learned to bring significant impacts in the society.
