The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region XI (BFAR XI) intercepted a medium-scale commercial fishing vessel during a seaborne patrol on April 23, 2026, within the municipal waters of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental. The activity was conducted in line with the agencyโs intensified monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) efforts across the region.
The operation was carried out by the Enforcement and Regional Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance Operations Center (ERMCSOC) aboard BFAR MCS Vessel 3007 which was manned by personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard.
Based on the report, the vessel, a registered medium-scale ring net commercial fishing vessel with a gross tonnage of 43.99, was found conducting fishing in municipal waters at a distance of approximately 10.30 kilometers from the nearest shoreline of Barangay Luzon, Governor Generoso. This constitutes a violation of Republic Act No. 10654, which strengthens measures against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing and amends Republic Act No. 8550, also known as the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.
The cited violations include operating a commercial fishing vessel within municipal waters under Section 86 (a)(2) and the use of active fishing gear within municipal waters under Section 95 of the law.
The vessel has been placed under temporary custody pending appropriate legal action and disposition. Its release will be subject to the settlement of corresponding fines and penalties in accordance with existing fisheries laws and regulations. The confiscated fish catch will be distributed to charitable institutions following proper procedures.
BFAR XI reiterated that sustained and intensified enforcement operations are essential to deter illegal fishing activities, protect marine resources, and promote responsible and sustainable fisheries management in the region.
