DepEd Mandaue City Strengthens Educators’ Competencies in Classroom-Based Action Research
The Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Mandaue City conducted the training titled “Strengthening Competencies in Classroom-Based Action Research” on October 13–15, 2026, at Fairfield Hotel, Mandaue City, bringing together education personnel in a concerted effort to strengthen research capabilities and promote evidence-based teaching practices.
The three-day training aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge, skills, and confidence in conducting classroom-based action research as a practical tool for addressing instructional challenges, improving teaching strategies, and responding to the diverse learning needs of learners. It underscored the importance of systematic inquiry and evidence-based decision-making in improving classroom practices and educational outcomes.
Serving as resource speakers were Dr. Sheena Mae Comighud, Regional Research Coordinator; Dr. Louei Sanglad, Master Teacher I; and Dr. Ria M. Vertulfo, Public Schools District Supervisor. Their expertise and professional experiences provided valuable insights into the principles, processes, and practical applications of classroom-based action research, guiding participants in strengthening their research competencies and translating educational concerns into meaningful research initiatives.
Throughout the training, participants engaged in discussions and learning activities designed to deepen their understanding of the action research process, from identifying classroom problems and formulating research questions to developing research plans, gathering and analyzing data, and translating findings into appropriate interventions. These competencies are essential in enabling teachers and school leaders to develop context-specific solutions to persistent teaching and learning challenges.
The activity also emphasized the importance of cultivating a research-oriented culture within schools, where educators are encouraged to reflect on their professional practices, evaluate the effectiveness of instructional interventions, and use research findings to guide decisions. Through classroom-based action research, teachers can move beyond assumptions and adopt approaches grounded in actual classroom experiences and evidence.
Moreover, the training reinforced the role of educational research in supporting continuous professional development, instructional innovation, and school improvement. By equipping educators with the necessary research competencies, DepEd Mandaue City seeks to encourage the development of practical, responsive, and sustainable solutions to challenges encountered in the delivery of quality basic education.
The initiative reflects the Division’s continuing commitment to empowering teachers and education leaders through relevant and meaningful professional learning opportunities. It also strengthens the connection between research and practice, ensuring that classroom experiences and learners’ needs remain central to educational decision-making.
As the training concluded, participants were expected to apply their acquired knowledge and skills in developing and implementing classroom-based action research projects within their respective schools. These research initiatives are envisioned to contribute to improved instructional practices, informed school-level interventions, and better learning experiences for learners.
Through this capacity-building initiative, DepEd Mandaue City reaffirms its commitment to developing reflective, innovative, and research-informed educators who continuously explore effective ways to enhance the quality of teaching and learning across the Division.
