Mayo 25, 2026 – Inilunsad ng Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), sa pamamagitan ng Plant Product Safety Services Division (PPSSD), ang kauna-unahang Rice Quality Analyzer sa BPI Compound sa Visayas Avenue, Quezon City, bilang bahagi ng mga hakbang sa modernisasyon ng Department of Agriculture (DA). Pinangunahan ni BPI Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban ang media launch at ipinakita ang makabagong teknolohiyang idinisenyo para sa mabilis at accurate na pagsusuri ng kalidad ng lokal at imported na bigas. Isinagawa ng BPI ang inisyatiba sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa mga pangunahing stakeholder mula sa pribadong sektor at mga kaugnay na ahensya bilang suporta sa Republic Act No. 12078.

Layunin ng BPI na mapalakas ang sistema ng pagsusuri sa kalidad at kaligtasan ng bigas sa bansa sa pamamagitan ng paggamit ng kauna-unahang Rice Quality Analyzer. Sa tulong ng makabagong kagamitang ito, inaasahang mapapabilis at mas mapapahusay ang pagsusuri ng lokal at imported na bigas upang matiyak ang pagsunod sa Philippine National Standards, mabawasan ang misdeclaration sa importasyon, at mapalakas ang food safety. Bahagi rin ito ng modernisasyon ng Department of Agriculture na naglalayong magbigay ng mas siyentipiko, episyente, at patas na proseso sa pagmomonitor ng kalidad ng bigas para sa kapakinabangan ng mga stakeholder at mamimili.

The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), through the Plant Product Safety Services Division (PPSSD), has strengthened its capability in rice quality assessment by acquiring its first Rice Quality Analyzer. This initiative primarily aims to enhance compliance with Republic Act No. 12078 by improving the accuracy and efficiency of rice quality assessment.

This state-of-the-art equipment can analyze 14 rice quality parameters, such as grain size, milling degree, chalkiness, and other key indicators, to ensure compliance with Philippine National Standards, and to help determine rice quality classification and identify possible distinctions between locally produced and imported rice.

Sa lahat ng mga nanay, lola, ate, mama, ma, mamita, tita, mommy, inay, nanay, at sa lahat ng kababaihang may pusong mapag-aruga sa Bureau of Plant Industry, mabuhay po kayo!

Kayo ang tunay na ilaw ng tahanan na nagsilang ng kagalingan, pagmamahal, katatagan, at inspirasyon sa bawat pamilyang Pilipino. Sa bawat sakripisyo, pag-aaruga, at walang sawang pag-unawa, nabubuo ang mga pangarap at lumalakas ang loob ng bawat tahanan at komunidad.

We collaborate with plant industry stakeholders to ensure the availability of high-quality seeds and advanced farming technologies, maintain the safety and integrity of plant food, and support the export industry through proactive biosecurity measures. Every effort, whether in the field, the laboratory, or behind the scenes, is guided by this commitment.

And beyond the formal words and reports, there is also the human side of service, teams working long days, finding joy in small wins, and even surviving on iced coffee. All for the same goal: to uplift agriculture and those who depend on it most.

May 5, 2026 | Matagumpay na idinaos ng Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) ang isang orientation-seminar tungkol sa Philippine Good Agricultural Practices (PhilGAP) Program para sa mga Local Government Units (LGUs) ng National Capital Region (NCR) na ginanap sa BPI-Plant Product Safety Services Division (BPI-PPSSD) National Pesticide Analytical Laboratory sa Quezon City.

32 kalahok mula sa 13 lungsod sa Metro Manila (Caloocan, LasPiñas, Makati, Malabon, Manila, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Parañaque, Pasig, Pateros, Quezon City, Taguig, Valenzuela) ang sumali upang palawakin pa ang kanilang kaalaman sa food safety.
Sa pangunguna ni PPSSD Chief William Mugot, kasama ang mga resource speaker mula sa Crop Research and Production Support Division (BPI-CRPSD), na sina Ernie Lito Y. Bollosa at Clyde Mark Domingo, na nag-discuss ng Philippine National Standards for urban and peri-urban agriculture, habang ipinaliwanag naman ni Jane Veena P. Gutierrez mula sa PPSSD ang proseso ng certification at ang apat na pangunahing modules ng PhilGAP.

Maliban sa mga talakayan, ay nagkaroon din ng mga maiiksing question and answer at pre- at post-examination para matiyak na naintindihan ng lahat ang mga paksang naipresenta. Maliban sa mga lectures, nakapag-tour din ang mga participants sa Food Safety Mobile Laboratory ng BPI.
Layunin ng seminar na ito na masiguro na ang mga kinatawan ng bawat LGU ay magkaroon ng sapat na kakayahan at gabay sa pagpapatupad ng mga pamantayan ng PhilGAP at mapapanatili ang mataas na kalidad ng produksyon ng agrikultura sa loob ng Metro Manila.

May 5, 2026 | Pinangunahan ni Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco "Kiko" Tiu Laurel Jr. ang inspeksyon sa bagong nitrate and nitrite analysis equipment ng Bureau of Plant Industry-Plant Product Safety Services Division (BPI-PPSSD) National Pesticide Analytical Laboratory sa Visayas Ave., Quezon City.

Ang proyektong ito ay may pondong ₱55 milyon mula sa DA at bahagi ng malawakang inisyatiba upang palakasin ang food safety monitoring sa bansa.

Kasama sina DA Undersecretary Philip C. Young, former USec Ernesto Ordoñez, PhD, BPI Director Gerald Glenn Panganiban, PhD., at PPSSD Chief William Mugot, personal na sinubukan ng kalihim ang isang test run ng leafy vegetables upang patunayan ang bilis at accuracy ng equipment sa pag-detect ng mga kemikal.

Binigyang-diin ni Sec. Kiko na ang food safety ay hindi lamang tungkol sa nakikita, naamoy, o nalalasahan, kundi pati na rin sa mga kemikal na hindi nakikita ng mata ngunit may malaking epekto sa kalusugan. Sinabi niya na ang mga bagong kagamitang ito ay makakatulong upang mas palakasin ang kakayahan ng BPI na makadetect ng mga ganitong uri ng contaminants. Bukod dito, sinabi rin ng kalihim na ito ay bahagi ng mga hakbang upang mas masiguro ang food security ng bansa at maprotektahan ang kalusugan ng mga mamamayan. Sa pamamagitan ng pagtutok sa mga widely consumed crops gaya ng leafy greens at prutas na bahagi ng pang-araw-araw na pagkain, ang anumang maliit na pag-unlad sa seguridad ng pagkain ay magkakaroon ng malaking positibong epekto hindi lamang sa kalusugan kundi sa pagbubukas ng mas malaking oportunidad sa export.

Bilang bahagi ng testing, nagkaroon na rin ng initial recovery trials sa mga green leafy vegetables, kasabay ng patuloy na method validation at verification. Sa ngayon, dahil wala pang pambansang pamantayan o regulatory standards ang Pilipinas para sa nitrate levels sa mga pananim, pansamantalang ginagamit bilang basehan ang mga pamantayan mula sa European Union (EU). Ang hakbang na ito ay tinitiyak na ang mga pagsusuri ay pasok sa international quality standards habang binubuo ang sariling panuntunan ng bansa.

Bukod sa laboratoryo sa BPI-PPSSD, Quezon City, ang high-tech na equipment na ito (Ion Chromatograph equipment) ay operational na rin sa iba pang PPSSD laboratories sa Cebu, Baguio, Davao, at Cagayan de Oro.
