Built in 1936, the Syquia Apartments were once the tallest buildings in Manila. With its solid poured concrete structure resembling a fortress, it was able to survive the Battle of Manila and even served as a refuge for army generals.
Similarly, the North Sy-Quia Apartment, constructed in 1938, is another luxurious pre-war building in the Malate area. Part of a trio of apartments built by the same family, it boasted a unique blend of modern and art deco designs, including the installation of the first private elevator.
Remarkably, the North Sy-Quia Apartment remains intact today, being the oldest apartment in Malate. Over the years, it has had the privilege of hosting influential artists and notable personalities, adding to its prestigious reputation.
