Connecting Healthy Cities, Sharing Global Experiences

On 31 August 2026, Dr. Fernando B. Garcia Jr., Professor and Dean, and Dr. TJ Robinson Moncatar, Associate Professor and Department Chair, represented the UP Manila College of Public Health, an Associate Member of the Alliance for Healthy Cities (AFHC), as panelists during the Pre-Conference Information and Networking Session of the 11th AFHC Global Conference at UNSW Sydney, Australia.

It was a lively and informal exchange with Healthy Cities colleagues from Australia, Japan, and South Korea—sharing how Healthy Cities networks work in their respective countries, learning from one another, and building connections for future collaboration.

Proud to bring the Philippine Healthy Cities experience and perspective to the global conversation as the country works toward stronger networks and healthier, more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities. 🇵🇭🌏

𝗨𝗣 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝝖𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗠𝗖𝗪 𝗬𝝾𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝝾𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 2026

Mr. Mar Alvin A. Rilles, a fourth-year BS Public Health student from the UP Manila College of Public Health, was selected for the Miracle Corners of the World (MCW) Global Young Leaders Fellowship 2026. Out of 3,400 global applicants, he was among the 50 fellows chosen, standing out as one of the Top 3 mentees from Southeast Asia during the 10-day training at New York University and Champlain College in the United States.

Representing the Philippines, Mr. Rilles engaged in cross-cultural exchanges focused on vision-building, strategic planning, and collaborative leadership. He emphasized that effective leadership mirrors public health—requiring multi-sectoral teamwork to drive lasting community impact. From August 2026 to July 2027, he will implementcommunity-based public health initiatives in the Philippines under international mentorship.

CPH Advances Health Literacy Agenda Amid AI, Nutrition, and Environmental Challenges

The University of the Philippines Manila College of Public Health (CPH) brought together local and international public health experts on Aug. 14, 2026, for a special lecture on “Advancing Public Health Literacy in a Changing World: AI, Nutrition, and Environmental Health.” Held at the Vicente Tiu Lim Conference Room of the Henry Sy Sr. Hall and streamed via Zoom, the activity examined how health literacy can respond to emerging challenges in artificial intelligence (AI), nutrition, and climate and environmental health. Organized in partnership with the Asian Health Literacy Association (AHLA), the lecture also formed part of CPH’s preparations to host the 13th AHLA International Conference in the Philippines in 2027 as part of its centennial celebration. The discussions emphasized the need to move beyond access to information toward critical evaluation, informed decision-making, and action.

SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Strengthened public health literacy by addressing AI and digital health, nutrition, and climate and environmental health. The discussions highlighted the importance of evaluating health information, making informed decisions, and translating knowledge into healthier practices and climate-resilient actions.

SDG 4 – Quality Education: Promoted critical health and digital literacy by equipping participants with approaches to assess AI-generated information, evaluate nutrition information, and understand climate-related health risks.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthened collaboration between UP Manila CPH and AHLA by bringing together academic and public health experts and supporting preparations for the 13th AHLA International Conference in 2027.
