Philippine Film Archive - FDCP

Philippine Film Archive - FDCP It ultimately endeavors to develop a culture, nation, and public that fully appreciates and is enriched by our country’s audiovisual heritage.

The Philippine Film Archive under the Film Development Council of the Philippines is the primary national agency that collects, preserves, and provides access to the audiovisual heritage of the Philippines. The Philippine Film Archive (PFA) (initially known as the National Film Archive of the Philippines (NFAP) was established by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) in January 2

011, pursuant to the mandate to establish a film archive as stated in Section 3 of the Republic Act No. 9167. By June of 2011, it became a member of the Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archive Assocaition (SEAPAVAA), and a couple of years later became an Associate Member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) on November 2020. PFA is a division under the FDCP that protects and upholds the nation’s historical, cultural, and artistic legacy and heritage by conserving and preserving the audiovisual materials connected to our history and culture. With this vision, PFA has taken charge of collecting, archiving, conservation, preservation, management, restoration, and access provision of Filipino films and audiovisual materials produced here or abroad. It has grown its collections to over 23,000 elements to date, ranging from cinematic masterpieces to documentary footage, television shows to sound recordings, and studio productions to the independent, orphan, and even experimental films. The PFA aims to make the nation’s history and culture known and accessible through the filmic medium, not only by conserving and preserving but by introducing the moving image of the past into contemporary life.

Synopsis: Alex Torres, a lawyer and part-time detective sent to Paris after the death of Alejandro Sarmiento to locate the heir to a 3 million peso inheritance. What should have been a straightforward search slowly pulls him into a small, restless world of jazz bars, runaways, and even unexpected love. Unbeknownst to him, Lili Gamboa was sent to watch his every move, though the assignment doesn’t stay simple once feelings start to get involved.
The film is about how truth, affection, and self-interest collide, and how each character is quietly pushed toward a decision that could bring them together or pull them apart. Pitong Gabi sa Paris (1961), directed by National Artist for Film by Eddie Romero, carries a gentle, nostalgic tone as it moves between Manila and Paris that frames the journey for the truth as a gentle, bittersweet reflection on identity and longing.

JOIN US FOR A SCREENING OF A CINEMATIC LEGEND: MANILA BY NIGHT!

In celebration of its 45th anniversary, National Artist Ishmael Bernal’s ‘Manila by Night’, returns to the big screen at the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) Film Center, Cine Adarna. This restored edition is presented by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Philippine Film Archive (PFA), and UPFI, honoring Bernal’s masterpiece as an icon of Philippine cinema.

ADMISSION IS FREE!

On 28 November 1980, Ishmael Bernal’s Manila by Night produced by Regal Films opened in theaters nationwide after a brush with the censors’ body that ordered its title to be changed to City after Dark. Its integral version was fortunately preserved and had circulated through the years for certain showcases from time to time including those for prestigious international film festivals. A restored edition courtesy of the Film Development Council of the Philippines with the Philippine Film Archive is shown anew at UPFI Film Center on the same day of its big-screen release exactly 45 years ago to best lend credence to the masterpiece that it is and hail it as the quintessential classic that serves as the National Artist’s own ode to the country’s capital city of everyone’s affections. Venue is Cine Adarna. Admission is free.
