Marking 125 years of lawmaking and public service, Mayor Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso and Vice Mayor Chi Atienza led the City Government of Manila in celebrating the 125th Founding Anniversary of the City Council on Tuesday, August 4.
Carrying the theme,โSangguniang Panlungsod ng Maynila: Paglingon sa Nakaraan, Inspirasyon sa Kinabukasan,โ the day began with a Thanksgiving Mass at the Session Hall. City officials, councilors, and employees then gathered at Bulwagang Rodriguez for the unveiling of the Sangguniang Panlungsod ng Maynila: A Civic Heritage Exhibit, which features historical legislative records, landmark ordinances, and photo archives detailing the councilโs history.
In her speech, Vice Mayor Chi Atienza highlighted the importance of executive-legislative synergy, noting how crucial collaboration is in delivering actual results to Manileรฑos.
โAs your Vice Mayor and Presiding Officer, I want to make sure that the City Council leaves a meaningful legacyโone that proves to be among the best in service to our city,โ Atienza shared.
โNaniniwala ako na kapag may magandang ugnayan at nagtutulungan ang Legislative at Executive branches, mas mabilis, mas epektibo, at mas nararamdaman ng bawat Manilenyo ang ating mga programa at ordinansa,โ she added.
Mayor Isko Domagoso echoed this sentiment, commending Vice Mayor Atienza for fostering harmony within the council while keeping local legislation aligned with the cityโs priorities.
He also reminded councilors that their primary mandate belongs to the public. Domagoso encouraged lawmakers to pass ordinances that will outlive their terms and benefit future generations.
โWhen there is harmony between the legislative and executive branches, public service becomes even more productive. We must continue to move forward, learn from past successes, and innovate for a better tomorrow,โ he added.
After the ribbon-cutting and exhibit tour, the event shifted into a festive celebration as city hall employees and officials joined an Anniversary Parade through the buildingโs hallways. Councilors also hosted refreshment booths in their respective offices for visitors and staff, culminating in a traditional boodle fight at the Session Hall Lounge.
More than just a celebration of the cityโs past, the 125th anniversary serves as a reminder of the work that still lies ahead. With a united city leadership, the city government stays committed to its daily mandate of passing practical legislation and directly addressing the communityโs Minimum Basic Needs.
