𝑪𝑴𝑼 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒔 𝑰𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎 𝒂𝒕 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆

Central Mindanao University (CMU), through the Office of Environmental and Safety Management (OESM), proudly represented the university on another global platform during the 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐋𝐔 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 & 𝐖𝐔𝐑𝐈 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲, where 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐎. 𝐁𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐠 presented the university’s innovative and systems-based approach to solid waste management.

Her presentation, titled “𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞: 𝐀 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬-𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦,” highlighted CMU’s transformative waste management framework that has significantly reduced landfill-bound waste while strengthening environmental accountability across the university community.

The presentation emphasized how CMU addressed the growing challenge of waste generation caused by increasing campus population and consumption. Instead of relying solely on conventional waste segregation practices, the university introduced a traceable waste management system integrating both 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫-𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫-𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, allowing waste to be traced back to its source. This innovative mechanism promotes accountability and ensures proper segregation at the point of generation.

Under the leadership of the Office of Environmental and Safety Management (OESM), CMU institutionalized key environmental policies such as the 𝐁𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞-𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫-𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Through these initiatives, landfill waste was drastically reduced from approximately 𝟑𝟎 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝟐 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 within a year of implementation despite continued campus growth.

The conference served as an opportunity for CMU to share its best practices with international educators, sustainability advocates, and institutional leaders, further demonstrating the university’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable campus governance.

The successful presentation also reflects the collaborative efforts of the OESM team, university administration, local government partners, and the entire CMU community in advancing sustainable environmental programs.

Through this participation, Central Mindanao University continues to strengthen its role as a leading institution in sustainability and environmental innovation, proving that local initiatives can create meaningful impact on a global stage.

Bucayong, Director of Office of Environmnetal and Safety Management (OESM), will be participating in the 2026 HLU Annual Conference & WURI Global Rankings Ceremony, where she will present our office’s initiatives on Solid Waste Management on another global platform at National Chi Nan University, Taiwan.

Central Mindanao University (CMU) has formally submitted its 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 (𝐏𝐒𝐑) to the Regional-EMB following the public scoping activity conducted on April 16, 2026, as part of the 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (𝐄𝐈𝐀) process.

The report documents the inputs, concerns, and recommendations gathered from stakeholders and the community during the scoping activity. This submission represents a significant milestone, as it fulfills one of the required steps before advancing to the next phase of the process.

With the completion of this requirement, the project will now proceed to the third stage, the 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰, where the Project proponent (CMU) together with the Regional- EMB personnel and EIA review committee will discuss and agree significant and relevant parameters for baselining.

CMU reiterates its commitment to fully comply with all environmental responsibilities, in line with its mission and vision of promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible development.

Central Mindanao University (CMU) is honored to be recognized as 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐎𝐏 𝐅𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐒 in the Philippines in the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨-𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 under the college category, receiving a trophy and a cash prize of ₱100,000 last April 22, 2026 held at Seda Vertis North Hotel Quezon City.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨-𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 (𝐍𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐅) is a nationwide program by the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐑) that recognizes schools that excel in promoting environmental awareness, sustainable campus practices, and community-based ecological initiatives.

This marks CMU’s second participation in the competition. During its first entry in 2013, CMU emerged as a national finalist representing Region 10 and earned special recognitions, including the Neste Water Conservation Award and the Meralco Energy Efficiency Award.

All of these achievements have been realized through the leadership and vision of the University President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe, as well as the guidance of the Office of Environmental and Safety Management (OESM) under the direction of Dr. Cecilia O. Bucayong. These efforts were further strengthened by the active collaboration of key university units, including the College of Forestry and Environmental Science (CFES), the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS), Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE), various student organizations such as SSC, COFESSCO, EnviroSSS, and BioSoc, Director Iris D. Opiso of FMSO, Director Eric L. Cenabre of OGS, UPDO, ODRRM, and other individuals who contributed as members of the committee.

This recognition affirms Central Mindanao University’s steadfast pursuit of its mandate to serve the nation while upholding its responsibility to protect and sustain the environment. Anchored in its mission and vision, the University continues to advance quality education, innovative research, and community engagement, nurturing individuals who are both socially responsible and environmentally conscious.
