PHO DISTRIBUTES DENTURES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS AND INDIGENT BENEFICIARIES

The Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, through the Provincial Health Office (PHO), successfully completed its denture provision activity with the distribution of dentures to 300 senior citizens and indigent beneficiaries who underwent dental screening and assessment last July.

The distribution marks the completion of the activity, following the initial screening, oral examination, assessment, and fitting process conducted by the PHO Dental Team to ensure that each beneficiary received dentures suited to their individual dental needs.

Beyond restoring missing teeth, the provision of dentures aims to improve the beneficiaries’ ability to eat and speak comfortably, while also helping restore their confidence and overall quality of life. For many senior citizens and indigent residents, access to dental prosthetic services can be financially challenging, making initiatives such as this an important component of accessible and inclusive public health care.

Through this initiative, the Provincial Government continues to demonstrate its commitment to bringing essential health services closer to the people, particularly to vulnerable and underserved sectors of the community.

The PHO extends its appreciation to everyone who contributed to the successful implementation of the activity—from the screening and assessment conducted in July up to the final distribution of dentures to the beneficiaries.

📍 5 Days, 5 Schools: Lanao del Sur Strengthens School-Based Mental Health Support

The Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, through the Provincial Health Office (PHO) Mental Health Program, successfully concluded a five-day School-Based Mental Health Seminar focused on “Promoting Emotional Regulation, Stress Management, and Bullying Prevention Among Students.”

With funding support from the Provincial Gender and Development (PGAD) Office, the initiative brought preventive and promotive mental health interventions to students from Adiong National High School, MSU-Lanao National College of Arts and Trades (MSU-LNCAT), Pagayawan National High School, M and S Maito A. Basak National High School, and Butig National High School.

Anchored on the theme “Healthy Minds. Safe Schools. Brighter Futures,” the program aimed to equip learners with practical skills in emotional regulation, stress management, resilience, healthy coping, bullying and peer-pressure prevention, and positive help-seeking.

Students took part in interactive sessions covering understanding emotions, managing strong emotions and impulses through the “Pause–Breathe–Think–Choose–Connect” approach, recognizing triggers and warning signs, and developing safe and healthy coping strategies. Discussions also incorporated faith and cultural values, including Sabr, Rahmah, self-control, and seeking help.

The five-day initiative was strengthened by a multidisciplinary team of resource speakers, including Dr. Rohanie M. Sultan, PhD, RGC; Abdulrahman Amerol, RGC, LPT; Juhanizah M. Dita, LPT, RGC, JD; Dr. Normaleah M. G**o, RGC, RN, LPT; and A’lim Shanolah Rasuman, whose expertise contributed to the program’s guidance, education, mental health, and faith- and culture-responsive components.

The activity also fostered collaboration among the PHO, PGAD Office, MBHTE-BARMM, Mindanao State University, Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association – Marawi City and Lanao del Sur Chapter, participating schools, teachers, coordinators, and other mental health and education partners.

📌Local Health Board Addresses Urgent Health Challenges: A Focus on STIs, Immunization, and Nutrition

MARAWI CITY — The Local Health Board (LHB) convened on August 24, 2026, to tackle pressing health issues in the province, emphasizing multi-sectoral collaborations to combat rising health risks.
Presided over by LHB Co-Chair and Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Alinader Minalang, the meeting brought together key provincial leaders, including Board Member Shiela Ganda, PHO II Dr. Princess Sacar, and City Health Officer Dr. Ali Dalidig. Representatives from various sectors actively participated, including PBO's Anisah Pundato, PGAD's Alliah Lucman, PSWDO's Johanessa Lucman, RYDO's Nihaya Darangan, PNAO Abdul Kahhar Barambangan, IPHO Chief of Staff Dr. Nihaya Macasindil, LDSPC's Noni Lao, and MARADECA's Johaima Diama.

During the session, the Amai Pakpak Medical Center (APMC) team, led by Medical Center Chief Dr. Shalimar Rakiin alongside Dr. Luzviminda Macud and Dr. Abdul Nasser Macaalin, presented alarming data on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV. The board identified social stigma and a lack of grassroots awareness as primary obstacles to patient treatment. To address this, the body approved the creation of a Local AIDS Council to implement a unified, multi-sectoral strategy.

The board also addressed the declining rates of childhood immunization caused by vaccine hesitancy and poor logistical support during rollouts. Leaders agreed to strengthen the immunization program by localizing national ordinances to boost LGU support, specifically targeting school children while enhancing community campaigns to counter fake news.

Furthermore, officials raised grave concerns over the nutrition situation, noting that BARMM currently holds the highest percentage of stunted children. The health sector warned that combining malnutrition with vaccine hesitancy makes children highly vulnerable to deadly diseases.

Recognizing that nutrition is deeply tied to food security, the board called for the immediate reactivation and strengthening of the Provincial Nutrition Council, reinforcing that the health sector cannot solve malnutrition alone.

📍 PHO Conducts Health Information Campaign for Adolescent Immunization Month

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) conducted a Health Information Campaign in celebration of National Adolescent Immunization Month, bringing together students from the Mindanao State University–College of Health Sciences (MSU-CHS) for an educational session focused on adolescent immunization, HIV awareness, and preventive health.

The activity featured a lecture on adolescent immunization delivered by Dr. Alyssa Rohaida Mitmug, who discussed the importance of vaccination in protecting adolescents against vaccine-preventable diseases and promoting better health outcomes.

A separate session on HIV awareness and prevention was facilitated by Ma’am Nurhanisa Carim, highlighting the importance of accurate information, HIV prevention, testing and counseling, confidentiality, and respect for the rights of people living with HIV. The discussion also emphasized key provisions of Republic Act No. 11166, or the Philippine HIV and AIDS Policy Act.

Following the lectures, participating students received Hepatitis B vaccination as part of the campaign’s preventive health interventions and efforts to strengthen adolescent immunization.

Through initiatives like this, the PHO continues to support the health and well-being of adolescents by bringing essential health education and services closer to the community.

Provincial Health Office Successfully Concludes Three-Day Operation Tuli in Celebration of the 67th Araw ng Lanao del Sur

As part of the celebration of the 67th Araw ng Lanao del Sur, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Lanao del Sur, through the dedicated efforts of its healthcare professionals, successfully conducted a three-day Operation Tuli (Free Circumcision Program) at the Ranaw Infirmary. The activity provided safe and quality circumcision services to male patients aged 12 years old and above.

The program was one of the Provincial Health Office's major health initiatives for the annual provincial celebration, reflecting its commitment to promoting preventive healthcare and improving the overall well-being of the people of Lanao del Sur.

Circumcision offers several important health benefits. It promotes better personal hygiene by making the ge***al area easier to clean, thereby reducing the accumulation of bacteria and other infectious agents. It also lowers the risk of certain urinary tract infections, decreases the likelihood of inflammation of the fo****in, and has been shown to reduce the risk of acquiring some sexually transmitted infections later in life. Beyond its medical advantages, circumcision can contribute to increased confidence and overall reproductive health when performed under proper medical supervision. In Islam, circumcision (khitan) is regarded as part of the fitrah—the natural practices associated with cleanliness and purity and it is widely recognized as a highly emphasized practice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and is observed by Muslims as an important act of faith and personal cleanliness. The procedure symbolizes spiritual purity, discipline, and adherence to Islamic teachings on hygiene.

The successful conduct of the three-day Operation Tuli was made possible through the unwavering dedication of the Provincial Health Office's medical team, whose commitment ensured the safe and efficient delivery of services to all beneficiaries. Mental Health Commodities Turnover – Continuing Rollout

This initiative reflects the unwavering commitment of the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Mamintal "Bombit" Alonto Adiong Jr., Vice Governor Mohammad Khalid "Mujam" Rakiin Adiong, and the guidance of Provincial Health Officer Dr. Princess Elham A. Sacar, in strengthening community-based mental health services, reducing stigma, and ensuring that quality mental health care reaches every Ranaw community.

The activity was spearheaded by the Provincial Health Office – PLGU Lanao del Sur Mental Health Program, led by Johanna B. Mangadang, RN, MPA, Mental Health Focal Person and Program Coordinator, together with the dedicated Provincial Mental Health Team and partner Rural Health Units.

As part of the continuing rollout of the Provincial Mental Health Program, the Mental Health Commodities Turnover was successfully conducted across several Rural Health Units from July 13–16, 2026, benefiting Butig, Lumbatan, Lumbayanague, Sultan Dumalondong, Bayang, Lumbaca-Unayan, Poona Bayabao, Masiu, Bubong, Buadiposo-Buntong, Lumba-Bayabao, Balindong, Kapatagan, Balabagan, Malabang, and Picong.

The rollout continued on July 28, 2026, with the successful turnover of Mental Health Commodities to the Rural Health Units of Pagayawan, Pualas, Ganassi, Madamba, Madalum, and Bacolod-Kalawi, further expanding access to essential mental health resources and strengthening primary health care services across the province.

Each RHU received essential Mental Health Commodities, including hygiene kits for mental health service users and their caregivers, Mental Health Awareness tarpaulins, IEC brochures, and selected medical supplies to strengthen the delivery of accessible, compassionate, and person-centered mental health services at the primary health care level.

Beyond the distribution of commodities, the activity also provided an opportunity to engage with RHU personnel, assess local mental health program implementation, and reinforce the integration of mental health into primary health care. Through continuous field visits, coordination, and technical support, the Provincial Mental Health Team remains committed to ensuring that quality mental health services are responsive to the needs of every community.

Through strong collaboration and shared commitment, the Provincial Health Office continues to empower local health facilities in delivering quality, evidence-based, and people-centered mental health services closer to the communities they serve.

Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur Strengthens Frontline Mental Health Care through WHO mhGAP Intervention Guide Version 2.0 Level 2 Training

In a significant step toward transforming mental health care in the province, the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Mamintal "Bombit" Alonto Adiong Jr., Vice Governor Mohammad Khalid "Mujam" Rakiin Adiong, and Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Princess Elham A. Sacar, successfully conducted the World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) Intervention Guide Version 2.0 Level 2 Training for doctors and nurses from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) and District Hospitals.

The activity was implemented by the Provincial Health Office – PLGU Lanao del Sur, in partnership with the Mental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health–BARMM, headed by Dr. Norman Prince D. Datumanong, as part of the province's continuing commitment to strengthen an integrated, accessible, and evidence-based mental health system. The training enhanced the advanced clinical competencies of frontline healthcare providers in the assessment, management, referral, and follow-up care of individuals with Mental, Neurological, and Substance Use (MNS) Disorders, using the WHO mhGAP Intervention Guide Version 2.0.

Mental health remains one of the Province's emerging public health priorities. Despite the increasing number of individuals requiring mental health services, Lanao del Sur continues to face a shortage of psychiatrists and mental health specialists. Through the WHO mhGAP strategy, non-specialist physicians and nurses are empowered with internationally recognized competencies, enabling them to identify, assess, manage, and appropriately refer individuals with mental health conditions within primary healthcare settings. This approach ensures that quality mental health services reach communities where specialist care is not readily available.

More than a training, this initiative represents a *long-term investment in the Province's healthcare workforce*. Every doctor and nurse trained through mhGAP strengthens the capacity of local health facilities to deliver timely, compassionate, and evidence-based mental health care. It also reinforces the referral system among the Provincial Health Office, City Health Office, District Hospitals, Rural Health Units, and the Ministry of Health–BARMM, bringing quality mental health services closer to every Ranaw family.

The successful implementation of this major capacity-building initiative was coordinated by Johanna B. Mangadang, RN, MPA, Nurse IV and Provincial Mental Health Program Focal Person/Program Coordinator, together with the dedicated support of the Provincial Health Office, the Mental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health–BARMM, resource speakers, partner agencies, and participating healthcare institutions, reflecting a strong collaboration toward achieving a resilient and responsive provincial mental health system.

The mhGAP Intervention Guide Version 2.0 Level 2 Training demonstrates the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur's commitment to implementing the Mental Health Act of 2018 (Republic Act No. 11036) and advancing universal access to quality mental health services. By continuously investing in the capacity of frontline healthcare providers, the Province is building a sustainable mental health system where every municipality is equipped to provide life-changing care, promote recovery, reduce stigma, and improve the overall well-being of its people.

Together, the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur and the Ministry of Health–BARMM are building a future where quality mental health care is no longer limited by the availability of specialists—but is made possible through a competent, empowered, and compassionate frontline health workforce serving every Ranaw community.
