Bats have been living in the Philippines since the time of the dinosaurs’ distant relatives—around 2.6 million years ago during the Pleistocene epoch! Over time, these night flyers adapted to places like Matanao, helping nature by spreading seeds, pollinating plants, and controlling insects.

One of their favorite hangouts is the famous Sub’on Cave in Matanao. But here’s the fun part—the cave got its name from the strong smell left by the bats! “Sub’on” is a native term that refers to the cave’s distinct odor, making it one of Matanao’s most unique tourist spots.

Josephine B. Beres a local cave guide shared her life experiences as a Lumad and as part of the Blaan community in Sitio Talambato, Asbang, Matanao — recalling the struggles they faced before, the challenges of living in a remote area, and the hardships caused by the lack of accessible roads and transportation.

Today, with the opening of the road, opportunities and access to services have improved, bringing positive changes to their lives and to the entire community in the sitio. 🌿

Her story reflects the strength, culture, and resilience of the Blaan people — and how development can help uplift communities while preserving their identity and traditions. ✨
