‎Bilang paggunita sa buhay, sakripisyo, at kabayanihan ng mga Pilipinong nag-alay ng kanilang buhay para sa kalayaan, hustisya, at kapakanan ng bansang Pilipinas, ang Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 1 ay nakikiisa sa pagdiriwang ng National Heroes Day.

‎Sa araw na ito, ating kinikilala ang mga bayaning nag-iwan ng makasaysayang pamana, maging ang mga makabagong bayani na patuloy na nagsisilbi at nagsasakripisyo para sa bayan—kabilang ang ating mga mangingisdang Pilipino.
‎
‎Nawa’y magsilbi itong paalala na ang pagiging bayani ay hindi nakasalalay sa posisyon o katungkulan, kundi sa mga taong maagang gumigising, humaharap sa hamon ng buhay, at nagsisikap upang may maihain sa hapag at may seguridad sa pagkain ang bawat mamamayan.

‎Halina’t bigyang-pugay ang mga bayaning nag-alay ng kanilang buhay at ang mga makabagong bayaning patuloy na kumikilos para sa kapakanan ng sambayanan.

Magkakaibang ekosistema ang lusay, korales, at bakawan, ngunit magkakaugnay ang kanilang ambag sa ating karagatan at mga pamayanan.

Nagbibigay ang mga ito ng mahahalagang tirahan para sa iba’t ibang isda at likas-yamang katubigan. Pinagmumulan ng kabuhayan ng mga baybaying-komunidad, tumutulong sa proteksyon ng mga pamayanan, at nag-aambag sa pangmatagalang seguridad sa pagkain.

Ngayong 𝐢𝐤𝐚-𝟔𝟑 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤, mula Setyembre 14 hanggang 18, 2026, binibigyang-diin ng DA-BFAR ang pangangalaga at responsableng pamamahala sa mahahalagang coastal at marine ecosystems sa ilalim ng temang:

Sa kabila ng mga alon ng pagsubok nitong mga nagdaang araw, hindi humihinto ang daluyon ng serbisyo publiko—para sa mga mangingisda!

Ang BFAR Region 1 ay patuloy na naghahatid ng relief packs sa mga mangingisdang naapektuhan ng bagyo at habagat, mula Ilocos Norte hanggang La Union.

Sa kabuuan, 3,500 relief packs ang inihanda ng BFAR Region 1 para sa mga apektadong mangingisda at kanilang mga pamilya, bilang bahagi ng patuloy na pagtugon at paghahatid ng serbisyo sa sektor ng pangisdaan.

Katuwang ng BFAR-RFO1 ang lokal na pamahalaan (LGU) sa pagtukoy ng mga bibigyang mangingisda gayundin sa paghahatid ng mga ito sa kanila.

𝐌𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞, 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐏𝐲𝐠𝐦𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐝𝐩𝐮𝐝, 𝐈𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞

At approximately 10:00 AM on August 18, 2026, a pygmy s***m whale was reported stranded alive at Sitio Namnama, Barangay Burayoc, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. The marine mammal was observed to have lost its buoyancy, requiring immediate intervention to prevent further stress and possible mortality.

The stranding response was promptly initiated through the coordinated efforts of local fisherfolk and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Pagudpud, in coordination with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) through the Provincial Fisheries Office–Ilocos Norte (PFO-IN), the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), and the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN).

Upon assessment, the stranded mammal was carefully assisted and transferred where it could be supported and monitored in a more suitable environment while efforts were undertaken to stabilize its condition. Responders continuously observed its behavior, breathing, buoyancy, and overall condition to ensure that it remained stable.

At approximately 3:00 PM on the same day, the pygmy s***m whale showed signs of recovery and was observed to have self-released and returned to the open waters. The successful self-release was considered a positive outcome of the timely and coordinated stranding response.

Following the release, 24-hour monitoring was conducted by the concerned responders and partner agencies. No subsequent re-stranding of the mammal was reported within the province of Ilocos Norte or in nearby provinces during the monitoring period.

The incident highlights the importance of immediate reporting and rapid response by the coastal community with inter-agency coordination and proper marine mammal stranding protocols in ensuring the survival and welfare of stranded marine mammals. The overall assistance contributed significantly to the stabilization and eventual self-release of the pygmy s***m whale.
