𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐑 𝐗, 𝐏𝐂𝐆, 𝐋𝐆𝐔 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝟏𝟔-𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐓 𝐑𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐆𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐒𝐇 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐎𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐍

A Whale Shark (𝘙𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘺𝘱𝘶𝘴), locally known as “Taluki,” measuring approximately 16 feet in length, was found dead and stranded in the shallow portion of the beach at Purok 1, Barangay Bolisong, Kinoguitan, Misamis Oriental on August 29, 2026.

The sighting was initially reported by concerned citizens in the area, who immediately alerted authorities regarding the stranded marine wildlife.

Upon receiving the report, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region X (DENR X), through its Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Gingoog City, together with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Kinoguitan, Misamis Oriental, promptly proceeded to the area to inspect and assess the condition of the whale shark.

Initial inspection revealed that the whale shark was already deceased. An approximately seven-inch-deep wound near the head area was observed on the animal. The exact cause of death, however, remains subject to further assessment and verification by the concerned authorities.

The DENR X also coordinated with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to conduct an inspection and assessment of the whale shark, considering that the species falls under BFAR’s jurisdiction.

Following the assessment, BFAR advised that the whale shark be buried as soon as possible to prevent further decomposition of the carcass, which may pose sanitation and environmental concerns, particularly as it was found along the shallow portion of the beach. The concerned authorities and the LGU are expected to facilitate the proper burial and disposition of the whale shark in accordance with applicable protocols.

The DENR X, together with its partner agencies and the LGU, continues to encourage the public to immediately report sightings of stranded, injured, or distressed marine wildlife to the nearest authorities. Prompt reporting and coordinated response are essential in ensuring the proper assessment, protection, and management of marine wildlife.

The incident likewise highlights the importance of continued cooperation among government agencies, local government units, and coastal communities in responding to marine wildlife incidents and safeguarding the country's marine resources.

DENR Express is a DENR initiative that brings environmental permitting and regulatory services directly to communities through mobile service hubs. Its goal is to make government services more accessible by allowing applicants to receive:

1. Environmental permit processing
2. Technical assistance and document validation
3. Guidance on compliance requirements
4. Some on-the-spot services and payments

The program was launched nationwide in April 2026 to help reduce travel time, costs, and processing burdens for applicants, especially small businesses, local government units, and communities.

Kinilala ng University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) ang Kagawaran ng Kapaligiran at Likas na Yaman ng Rehiyon 10 dahil sa matibay na ugnayan at mahalagang ambag nito sa unibersidad at sa mga pamayanang pinaglilingkuran nito.

Ang pagkilala ay ipinagkaloob sa pamamagitan ng isang Plaque of Recognition sa ginanap na “Tribute to Partners” noong Agosto 19, 2026, sa Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras (DRER) Memorial Hall, USTP, Cagayan de Oro City.

Kinatawan ni Regional Executive Director Ronald D. Gadot, tinanggap ni Assistant Regional Director for Management Services Vergilino P. Alima ang nasabing plake bilang pagkilala sa kontribusyon at pakikipagtulungan ng nasabing kagawaran sa USTP.

Ipinagkaloob ang parangal bilang pagkilala sa patuloy na pakikipagtulungan ng Kagawaran sa USTP, partikular sa pagsuporta sa mga inisyatibang nagtataguyod ng kooperasyon sa larangan ng edukasyon, inobasyon, at paglikha ng mga oportunidad na kapaki-pakinabang para sa unibersidad at sa mga pamayanang pinaglilingkuran nito. Ayon sa citation ng parangal, nakatulong ang nasabing partnership sa pagsusulong ng edukasyon, inklusibong kaunlaran, at mga oportunidad tungo sa isang kinabukasang nakabatay sa kahusayan, agham, teknolohiya, at pagkakaisa sa iisang layunin.

Bahagi ang pagkilalang ito ng 2026 Charter Day Celebration ng USTP, na nagbigay-pugay sa mga katuwang at stakeholder ng unibersidad bilang pagkilala sa kanilang mahalagang ambag sa patuloy na pag-unlad at paglago nito.

Higit sa lahat, binibigyang-diin ng pagkilalang ito ang matatag at patuloy na partnership ng dalawang institusyon ng pamahalaan, lalo na sa pagsusulong ng pagbabahagi ng kaalaman, inobasyon, kamalayang pangkalikasan, at mga sama-samang inisyatiba na nag-aambag sa napapanatiling kaunlaran at kapakanan ng mga pamayanan sa Northern Mindanao.
