The Central Luzon State University (CLSU), through the Technology Promotion Division of the University Extension Center (UEC), successfully conducted a training program titled โ€œBoosting Farm Productivity through the Integration of ItikPINAS Kayumanggi and SPRice CLS-2 as a Sustainable Farming Approachโ€ on May 13, 2026, at the FITS Centerโ€“City Agriculturist Office.

The activity forms part of the project, โ€œEmpowering Communities Through the Adoption of Sustainable Practices in ItikPINAS and Rice Ecosystems (ECO-ASPIRE) in Nueva Ecija: An S&T Community-Based Farming Approach,โ€ funded by the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).

Mr. Randy L. Kwan, Project Leader of the ECO-ASPIRE Project, formally welcomed the participants and presented an overview of the training. He highlighted the importance of sustainable and integrated farming systems in improving farm productivity, strengthening food security, and supporting the development of local farming communities.

The training aimed to enhance the knowledge and competencies of farmer-partners on sustainable farming practices through the integration of ItikPINAS production and Special Purpose Rice CLS-2 (SPRice CLS-2) cultivation. Discussions focused on the status of the poultry industry, recommended housing systems, feeding and nutrition, production management, record keeping, and financial management for ItikPINAS production. Participants were also introduced to the farming and cultivation practices appropriate for SPRice CLS-2 production.

Ms. Jean Karla D. Julian, Assistant Professor from the Department of Animal Science, College of Agriculture, CLSU, and Farm Manager of the ItikPINAS Project, served as the resource speaker for the ItikPINAS production lecture. Meanwhile, Mr. Elmer P. Natividad, Statistical Aide from the Crops and Resources Research and Development Center (CRRDC), CLSU, discussed the overview, cultivation practices, integration strategies, harvesting techniques, and post-harvest management of SPRice CLS-2.

The participants expressed their appreciation for the conduct of the training and recognized the relevance of the topics discussed during the activity. They likewise shared that the knowledge and insights gained from integrating ItikPINAS and SPRice CLS-2 technologies would help improve their farming practices and promote sustainable agricultural production within their respective communities.

Following the successful conduct of its financial management training, the University Extension Center (UEC) of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) sustained its efforts to strengthen cooperative governance by holding a virtual training on Credit and Risk Management on April 24, 2026.

The activity gathered 99 cooperative officers, staff, and members from various primary cooperatives to deepen their understanding of responsible lending practices, risk assessment, and financial safeguards essential to cooperative sustainability.

Implemented under CLSUโ€™s accreditation as a training provider of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), the training formed part of the universityโ€™s continuing commitment to support cooperatives through relevant and responsive capability-building programs.

Mr. Mark Anthony R. Ibarra, Project Leader of Project COยทUP, emphasized the importance of proactive financial management in sustaining cooperative operations and protecting member resources.

โ€œEffective credit and risk management are the backbones of a resilient cooperative. Our goal is to protect the hard-earned savings of every member,โ€ Mr. Ibarra said.

Assoc. Prof. Gaudencio P. Gallardo, Jr., a CDA-accredited trainer, engaged participants with practical discussions on responsible credit management and risk assessment. He described credit as โ€œa tool that can either support growth or lead to financial distress if not managed with discipline.โ€

The workshop introduced participants to the 5 Cโ€™s of Credit and the application of risk matrices in identifying and managing potential financial threats within cooperatives.

Ms. Daffodil B. Parcasio, Chairperson of the Muรฑoz National High School Multipurpose Cooperative, highlighted the importance of balancing sound collection policies with compassion and understanding toward members facing financial difficulties.

Post-training evaluation results indicated a significant improvement in participantsโ€™ competencies, with many commending the practical and easy-to-apply strategies shared during the session. Majority of the participants were women actively engaged in cooperative leadership and operations.

Conducted via Zoom, the activity marked another milestone under Project COยทUP, a university-led initiative aimed at empowering cooperatives through continuing education and capacity development.

The University Extension Center (UEC) of the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) strengthened the financial management capabilities of 99 cooperative leaders and members through a virtual training workshop conducted on April 23.

The initiative was organized under CLSUโ€™s role as an accredited training provider of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), ensuring that the program adhered to the agencyโ€™s standards for cooperative officer development.

In her message, Dr. Eugenia G. Baltazar, Chief of the Continuing Education Division (CED), underscored the universityโ€™s commitment to empowering local organizations through continuing education and extension services.

โ€œThe goal of this training is to equip our cooperative leaders with the necessary skills to manage their finances effectively and ensure the sustainability of their operations and the welfare of their members,โ€ Dr. Baltazar said.

Results of training needs assessments conducted by the CED from 2025 to 2026 showed that many primary-level cooperatives continue to face challenges in bookkeeping, budgeting, and interpreting financial reports. These concerns often affect internal controls and member confidence.

Assoc. Prof. Winnie DC. Villanueva, a CDA-accredited trainer and resource person for the activity, emphasized the broader value of sound financial management in cooperatives.

โ€œFinancial management is not only a technical function but also a critical governance tool that supports both operational efficiency and long-term institutional stability,โ€ she explained.

The eight-hour training covered cooperative accounting fundamentals, strategic financial decision-making, internal controls, and wealth-building strategies. Participants were also introduced to quantitative tools such as Net Present Value (NPV) for evaluating long-term investment projects.

More than 60 percent of the participants were women, with strong representation from the Muรฑoz National High School Multipurpose Cooperative and the CLSU Credit Cooperative.

Participants expressed high satisfaction with the activity, particularly noting the relevance and practical value of the topics discussed.
The training was spearheaded by the Continuing Education Division under Project COยทUP, an initiative focused on empowering cooperatives through upskilling for sustainable growth.
